Pairs Well With: Hamilton Intra-Matic

The Hamilton Intra-Matic is a throw back to another era of watch making. This clearly mid-century style piece has the charm of a vintage watch, with the components and reliability of a modern mechanical. The look is utterly simple with a no-frills case, a domed silver dial, black hour marker, black minute and hour hands, no seconds and a date window at 6. It features an ETA 2892-2 automatic movement and a large domed sapphire crystal. It’s minimal, but oozes style. The Intra-Matic is available in multiple color ways and two sizes; a 42mm for those who want a more contemporary feel and a 38mm for those dedicated to the vintage look…all run in the $800 – $1000 range. Of the color ways, the one that stands out as feeling the most like a relic of the past is the gold case version.

We don’t talk about gold watches often on w&w for a few reasons, but the most pertinent is that there aren’t many available in the affordable range with an aesthetic that speaks to us. The mix of the gold case to the domed silver dial, to the black hands and leather strap, make the Intra-Matic simply cool looking. The gold, which does inherently make the watch dressier, doesn’t come off as fussy or pretentious, but rather cool and almost a bit daring. So, for this edition of Pairs Well With we put together an outfit that played off of the mid-century aesthetic of the Intra-Matic by channeling a bit of the timeless style of the ultimate 50’s male icon: James Dean.

While I like this watch, it is a bit too daring for my tastes. The font choice for the face is too much.

Also, am I the only one who tries to steer clear of black leather straps? Brown just goes with so much more.

I agree about brown straps, for the most part…Black and gold though do make for a slick look.
