Introducing the Oris Hangang Limited Edition, a Green Dialed Aquis for a Good Cause

The latest Oris release to benefit the restoration of a critically at-risk body of water is the Hangang Limited Edition. This diver with a bright green dial and unobtrusive date display is built on the Aquis platform. Oris, as readers of Worn & Wound will be aware, has taken an active role in many environmental causes, often relating to the protection of the world’s oceans and the life they support. This time, the brand’s focus is on the Hangang River, located in South Korea. The river is an important source of freshwater for the city of Seoul, which is home to approximately 10 million people. For this release, Oris has partnered with Seoul KFEM, part of the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements. For years, this organization has worked to protect and clean up the Hangang River, which has been neglected for decades. Proceeds from sales of the watch help support KFEM’s mission, and Oris is supporting several “clean-up days” that the group has scheduled for later in 2020. These events draw hundreds of local volunteers, who work to clean up harmful litter along the river’s path. The clean-up days themselves also help raise awareness for the cause, with the idea being that over time more and more people will take action in assisting to clean up the Hangang. 

The Hangang Limited Edition watch is a 43.5mm diver that’s part of the Aquis family. This is Oris’s modern, professional diver, with 300 meters of water resistance, a ceramic bezel insert, and an integrated bracelet design. For this edition, Oris has chosen a gradient green dial with a bezel to match, and is utilizing Oris caliber 743, a modified Sellita SW220-1 with a small seconds register at 9:00 and a circular date display. This is similar to an old fashioned pointer date (another Oris favorite), but instead of a long hand pointing to the correct day of the month, a date indicator moves around the dial in a circular ring, corresponding to the correct date. It’s a clean display that keeps the focus on the green dial while still being easily readable and functional. 

This iteration of the Aquis sits at the upper end of the size spectrum (various other versions of the Aquis are available in 39.5mm and 41.5mm cases). However, because of the short lug design, even the larger case sizes in this line tend to fit comfortably. This watch will definitely have a lot of wrist presence (the green dial will certainly draw attention), but dive watch fans with smaller or average sized wrists might be surprised by how well such a big case, on paper, actually wears in the real world. 

The Hangang Limited Edition will consist of 2,000 examples, and retail for $2,600. Each watch is decorated on the caseback with an engraving of a map of the Hangang River, along with the individual limited edition number. Oris
