Pairs Well With: Seiko x Giugiaro SCED035 “Ripley”

Boots? Check. Jacket? Check. M41A Pulse Rifle? Check. Now all that’s needed is a suitable watch to aid in our alien-hunting endeavor. Fortunately enough, our review of the Seiko X Giugiaro SCED035 (worn by Sigourney Weaver in James Cameron’s Aliens) can be found here and offers an in-depth look at the curious and iconic timepiece.

The eye-catching SCED035, or “Ripley”, is not only a rare and unique piece, but an excellent conversation starter as well. Interesting enough, the futuristic timekeeper was designed by automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also appropriately designed the DeLorean. With a limited production of only 3,000 pieces and a Japanese domestic release, the Seiko X Giugiaro SCED035 is able to satiate the desires of collectors and Aliens fans alike at around $350 in the U.S. That being said, let’s dwell into the appropriate garb for combating the impending alien invasion.

Barbour Sapper Jacket

What better way to sport such a bold watch than with some equally-badass outerwear? This Barbour Sapper jacket is both aesthetically and functionally inspired by similar coats employed by the British military. Boasting weather-resistant waxed cotton construction, corduroy lined collar, and a hidden stowaway hood, this jacket is packed with different features. The garment is fully lined and comes with adjustable cuffs and draw cord in the inner waist. Not to mention, the coat is equipped with four flap pockets on the front for storing things like phones, wallets, flasks, and the innumerable phone numbers you’ll receive wearing the Sapper jacket. Though the coat is far from cheap at $429, those familiar with Barbour know that the price is worth every penny.

Pistol Lake Henley

There’s something about the classic, yet almost vintage look of an off-white henley that draws me in. The fellas over at Pistol Lake claim their contender for the best henley “needs no introduction”. Composed of pre-shrunk 100% cotton cut into a flattering athletic fit, the Pistol Lake henley is a versatile piece compatible with practically every corner of your wardrobe. Though coming in at only $40, it’s made right here in the United States (Los Angeles to be specific). Don’t be surprised if you find yourself picking up multiple colors.

Orion Leather Latigo Belt

Speaking from personal experience, Orion makes the best belts I’ve ever owned. Handcrafted in the USA of thick full-grain leather, these belts are conditioned with special oils to create a nice, glossy finish on the leather. As soon as I felt the difference in leather, I knew I’d never go back.

These belts retail for around $60-$70, which may deter some of those used to cheaper (yet inferior quality belts). Chances are, you’re going to be wearing a belt nearly every day of your life, so why not invest in one that will last years all while supporting American industry? Remember to order 2 sizes above your waist measurement.

Levi’s Jeans

There are few clothing brands that are established as Levi Strauss & Co. How about a brief history of the company? Well, in the mid-18th century, a man named Levi Strauss traveled to California in the midst of the gold rush hoping to make his fortune; however, his fortune would be not gold, but blue. Long story short, the company invented and popularized the classic blue jean, using riveted construction to create the ultimate workman’s pant. Since then many things have changed about denim jeans, including colors, washes, cuts, and fashion application, but Levi Strauss still continues to provide a reliable pair of denim jeans for a great price.

Levi’s comes in many different cuts to suit practically every body type and personal preference. I’m a huge fan of the 511 cut, which is slim throughout the leg and slightly tapers near the calf, but they’re by no means skinny like the 510 variant. In terms of washes, my go-to is the Rigid Dragon, which is the closest Levi’s mainline offering to raw denim (only washed once). It lacks any sort of pre-distressing, so the fades that develop naturally are from the contours of your own body and result in a truly personal pair of jeans. If this sounds like something you’re into, I’d advise checking out raw selvedge denim from brands like Unbranded and Naked & Famous.

Red Wing Iron Ranger

How else to complete your ensemble of American-made goods than with a rugged pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers? These boots are Goodyear-welted and crafted from sturdy, oil resistant leather, so you can be certain they can handle any task you throw at them. The Iron Rangers are available in a variety of different materials and colors to choose from. A cheaper alternative that’s still made in the USA is the Chippewa Apache Lace-Up boot.
