Earlier this month, Windup Watch Fair returned to Chicago, marking the 10th anniversary of the Windup series with a three-day celebration that packed Venue West with energy, excitement, and a thriving community of watch lovers. From July 11–13, the West Loop space pulsed with the sounds of winding crowns, rotating bezels, and passionate conversation. As always, the event was free and open to the public, drawing everyone from longtime collectors and industry insiders to curious newcomers discovering mechanical timekeeping for the first time.

Over 70 brands filled the space, and this year’s Fair felt more expansive and dynamic than ever. Among the standout moments were the lead sponsor installations, which showcased the diverse spirit of the Fair. Atelier Wen’s “Perception” model, featuring hand-engraved guilloché dials and a homegrown micro-rotor movement, was a fan favorite, embodying the blend of artistry and innovation that Windup thrives on. Just across the room, Citizen celebrated 40 years of its legendary Aqualand with a special anniversary edition that tied directly into a live recording of The Worn & Wound Podcast that explored Citizen’s dive legacy and the corresponding Windup in a Lake dive expedition in Lake Michigan.
Casio’s presence this year centered on the MTGB4000, a tech-forward G-SHOCK that balanced extreme durability with sleek presentation. Christopher Ward’s C60 Trident Reef, meanwhile, drew curious glances and engaged discussions with its asymmetric design and floating escapement, offering a fresh take on everyday mechanical wear. And Oris brought summer vibes into full swing with a vivid berry-toned “Taste of Summer” Aquis Date, proof that serious dive watch collections can still have a little fun with color.
One of the most memorable launches came courtesy of Bulova, who returned to Windup Chicago with another show-exclusive limited edition. This year’s release was a stealthy reinterpretation of the Snorkel, limited to just 50 pieces and inspired by Chicago’s Cloud Gate (aka “The Bean”), complete with a polished dial and illustrated caseback. Bulova also hosted a screening of its 150th anniversary documentary at the Alamo Drafthouse in Wrigleyville, adding a touch of cinematic flair to the weekend.

While watches were the main attraction, Windup has always been about celebrating craftsmanship in all its forms. Bruichladdich brought a taste of Islay with pours of their signature Scotch, turning their booth into a hub for conversation and connection. Nearby, Chicago-based Oak Street Bootmakers showcased their meticulously crafted footwear that’s made just miles from the venue. Together, they reinforced the theme of craftsmanship that’s central to the Fair: whether it’s measured in seconds, stitches, or single malts.
Programming at the Fair was as intriguing as ever. Panels and live podcast sessions gave attendees an inside look at what’s happening in the world of independent watchmaking, featuring voices from emerging independents like Atelier Wen, seasoned brands like Oris and CD Peacock, and even a few surprises such as HORAGE’s announcement of their pursuit of an American-made movement.
But perhaps the most lasting impression of the weekend came from the people. There was a real sense of connection. Wrist shots turned into conversations, conversations turned into genuine friendships. Watch events can be overwhelming or intimidating, but Windup Chicago always keeps things grounded. It’s a space where passion is shared openly, where newcomers are welcomed, and where every wrist tells a story. As one attendee put it: “You come for the watches, but stay for the people.”
Whether you walked out with a grail watch, a sweet strap, or some new-found friends, Windup Chicago 2025 reminded us why this community is so special. The 10th Anniversary Edition of the Windup Watch Fair on October 17-19 is right on the horizon—but for now, we’re still riding high on the energy Chicago delivered. Until next time.
