First Look at the Nomos Club and Tangente Sport neomatik 42 Date

For 2019, Nomos has expanded both its Tangente and Club lines with new references that are bigger, more water resistant, and more heavily lumed. While this isn’t the first time the German brand known for refined and spare dress watches has flirted with sports watches, it definitely represents a new direction and an attempt to penetrate a new market. Let’s take a closer look at these three models unveiled earlier this year.

The Club has always been among the most casual, go anywhere, do anything watches that Nomos makes. It’s often marketed as a first watch for new mechanical timepiece enthusiasts or as a simple everyday option that fits your life no matter how you live it. The new Sports model takes this to another level, with a beefed up case (this and the new Tangente are the rare Nomos that crack the 10mm thickness mark) and plenty of lume. The diameter is 42mm, but you may find that it wears larger, as many do with Nomos, because the bezel barely there. Like all Nomos watches, this is mostly dial. Currently, the Club Sport comes in a simple black dial with bright white numerals.

The Tangente Sport is similarly enlarged, 42mm in diameter and a hair thicker than the Club, and available in white and black variants, each with contrasting elements in the numerals and applied squares of lume. I’m somewhat of a Nomos traditionalist and am more drawn to the white dial and its hands with a distinctive seafoam green shade, though both are extremely legible and unmistakably Nomos. As with the Club Sport, it will be interesting to see how this larger Tangente, with its signature elongated and thin lug design, actually wears on the wrist.

For fans of the brand, I think the most interesting aspect of this release will be the new bracelet that Nomos is introducing with the new Sport line. At a glance, it has a distinct vintage appeal, and to my eyes has a certain resemblance to the old Speidel Twist-o-Flex bracelets of the 1960s, although this is clearly more refined. The links are thin and run parallel with one another, and Nomos has employed a simple fold-over clasp design and a simple sizing system via the screws underneath. It remains to be seen how hard wearing this bracelet design will be over time, but there’s no denying that the design team has crafted something that pairs wonderfully with the watch itself. Nomos
