Making An Impression With The BOLDR Odyssey Freediver

BOLDR Supply Co.’s lineup of tough and adventure ready watches welcomes a new addition to the group — the Odyssey Freediver. Inspired by the minimalist sport of freediving, the watch is BOLDR’s unique take on a dive watch. In the sport, divers submerge themselves below the surface of the ocean, usually with just a pair of goggles, a wetsuit, and some flippers. Not an air tank in sight. Just as free diving is one of the purest forms of the sport, the Odyssey Freediver is BOLDR’s purest form of a dive watch. Let’s take a closer look at this exciting new watch from the budding brand.

While the Odyssey is by no means minimal in the traditional sense of the word in the world of watches, for BOLDR, it is. BOLDR’s design language is right there in their brand name — BOLD. An angular case exudes a modern and technical look, while a textured dial resting under the flat sapphire lens adds visual appeal. Their previous dive watch measured in at a massive 45.5mm wide, featuring chunkier features and a less refined case. The case on the Freediver still has those modern angles, just quite a bit more wrist-friendly at 40mm wide and 14mm thick. It’s also the first time that BOLDR has made use of polishing on any of their watches. Rendered entirely in 316L stainless steel, both the case and bracelet are built to be used and abused. The Odyssey Freediver’s clasp features a quick release spring bar for ease of use. Water resistant to 300m, the watch is rated to depths further than the currently held deepest free dive at 214m below the surface. Flip the case over, and you’ll be treated to a view of the Kraken inspired art embossed into the case back. 

At launch, there are several compelling dial options offered by the brand. A deep green and bold red dial are offered with a gradient fume treatment. Each has matching bezels. You can opt for a bright white dial with a snowy base texture that’s subtle, yet interesting. There are also  two natural meteorite options available — a bright blue or rich black. Each dial features large legible numerals treated with BGW9 lume that will glow a pleasant teal color long into the night. You’ll also find lume on the modern handset and inset into the ceramic unidirectional bezel surrounding the dial. A date display rests at 6 clock in a framed aperture.

Keeping the time is Miyota’s 9015 automatic mechanical movement. It beats away at 28,800bph, sending the seconds hand around the dial with a smooth sweep. 42 hours of power reserve will keep the watch running for just about 2 days between wearings. The movement also features Parashock protection from bumps and knocks, making it an ideal option for an affordable adventure watch.
