Baseworld 2018: Introducing the Sinn 836 Tegimented—The German Brand’s Latest Tool Watch

Sinn is known and respected for their long history of well-designed and meticulously engineered tool watches. For Baselworld 2018, they’re staying true to that ethos with several new releases, with the beautiful blue-dialed Sinn 103 Sa B E chronograph anchoring the collection as a real standout. However, not all of Sinn’s new releases are as bright and shiny as the 103. Case in point: the new 836 Tegimented, a tool watch with a decidedly familiar design language, but one that also features some interesting departures from the Sinn norm.

The new features aren’t dramatic in their differences from Sinn’s past, but they are noteworthy. Many of Sinn’s models are small(ish) by today’s standards, but Sinn has given the 836 a size bump (and as we learned from the Sinn rep, it’s something that their customers have been begging for). The fully Tegimented steel case is 43mm wide with 22m lugs, yet a mere 10.6mm thick. This gives the 836 a larger presence while maintaining its wearability.

Sinn also removed the crown guards from the case, and this little update gives the watch a more modern vibe. The case finishing is worth noting, too. It’s a beautiful mix of satinized and polished surfaces rather than the fully bead-blasted look that’s been Sinn’s go-to. The crystal is sapphire with a double anti-reflective coating and the case back is solid.

The simple and easy-to-read dial is matte black with painted hour markers, and there’s minimal text on the dial. A date window has been discreetly placed at six o’clock, preserving the symmetry of the dial. While previous similarly styled Sinn watches like the 556 had large sword hands that were fully painted, the 836 boasts light-catching rhodium-plated hands filled with lume. This is a much better look in my opinion—it’s somewhere between retro and modern. For contrast, the second hand has been painted red.

The 836 is powered by a 21-jewel, ETA 2892-A2 automatic movement, with a power reserve of 42 hours. It carries a sufficient water resistance of 100 meters, and it’s also resistant to low pressure for high-altitude use.

Priced at $1,790 on leather strap and $2,050 on the famously comfortable Sinn steel bracelet, the 836 continues Sinn’s tradition of offering highly engineered tool watches at a reasonable price. Sinn
