Formex Adds Meteorite to the Essence Sports Watch for a New Limited Edition

In a world of vintage inspired dive watches, the Formex Essence line offers something quite a bit different for watch enthusiasts whose taste is bent more toward the modern, angular, and tech focused. Many know Formex as the inventors of the “Case Suspension System,” which allows the center of the case to move up and down as pressure is exerted from above or below the watch. The idea is similar to shock absorbers on a car, and Formex touts the system as allowing for greater comfort on the wrist and adding protection and robustness to the watch case. Today we’ll look at the newest members of the Essence collection, featuring limited edition meteorite dials.

Let’s back up and take a closer look at the Essence case. Even outside of the Case Suspension System, there’s a lot to like here for someone who prizes finishing and a unique shape in their sports watch. The Essence case features sharp transitions between high polished and brushed surfaces, creating dramatic angles at the lugs and near the bezel. There’s a hardness to the caselines of the Essence that is really the antithesis of the soft, flowing lines of many vintage inspired sports watches. Formex touts the Essence for its durability, and it certainly looks the part.

The Formex Essence Space Rock, as it’s called, is available in two versions. One with the standard stainless steel case, the other with a carbon fiber composite case that is 40% lighter and features a ceramic bezel and crown. Each is paired with a distinctive meteorite dial, a feature often associated with very high end luxury watches for their rarity and unique appearance. The precise appearance of the Widmanstätten pattern (the series of triangular shapes on each dial) is completely unique to each piece, and the result of a cooling process that takes millions of years. 

Formex has outfitted the steel version of the Essence Space Rock with a COSC certified Sellita SW200-1, while the carbon fiber version uses an STP1-11 movement. At $1,450 for the steel watch and $1,980 for the carbon fiber, there’s a lot of value here in the impressively finished case and rare dial material.
