Pairs Well With: VOID V01LED-GO digital watch

Void watches by Swedish designer David Ericcson are a different take on the simple digital watch. They are bold, minimal and speak more to object design and architecture than the history of watch design.  As they put it: “the design draws heavily on the Scandinavian design tradition using simple geometries and materials often found in architecture.” They come in various colors and finishes, including a unique analog model, but the VO1LED in brown and gold, one of their newest models, really called out to me. Instead of having an LCD screen, the VO1LED uses an old-fashioned red LED module that requires you to push a button to illuminate. This gives the watch a distinctly retro feeling to it, and sets it apart from other digital watches out there. I also really enjoy the way the watch looks “off,” which is not something you see everyday. The VO1LED runs about $180, which is very reasonable.

We felt that this watch would be an interesting starting point for a Pairs Well With, because of its retro aesthetic, structural geometries and use of materials. As such we thought that it would go well with classic cuts and subdued colors: an outfit that would accentuate the materials of the watch but not overwhelm its subtlety.
