In 2016, Seiko unveiled a range of solar-powered “Tuna” divers under the brand’s Prospex brand. In the two years since, Seiko has iterated heavily on the affectionately-named “Solar Tuna” (check out our coverage on the recent “Street Series”), and the collection has seen notable success with press and enthusiasts alike.
Seiko recently revealed another variant, the Ref. STBR011, and, in my opinion, it’s one of the cleanest looking versions yet. There’s one catch, though. This is a JDM model—a special edition collaboration between Seiko and LOWERCASE for the Japanese retailer United Arrows (Seiko has in the past put out Solar Tunas with other retailers, chief among them Japan’s Journal Standard and Freeman’s Sporting club stateside).
Eagle-eyed Seiko fans will recognize the dial and handset. The inspiration is clearly pulled from Seiko’s first and perhaps most iconic dive watch—the Ref. 6217, otherwise known as the 62MAS. The most notable point of departure is the addition of a date function at four.
According to Seiko, the watch measures 42.7 millimeters across, 43 millimeters lug-to-lug, and 11.5 millimeters thick. It’s rated to 200 meters. The V147 caliber operates approximately 10 months on a full charge, and there’s built-in overcharge protection. Additional specs include a ratcheting bezel, screw down crown, and Seiko’s excellent Lumi Brite compound on the hands and indexes.
