In Detail: Getting Flight-Ready With The Citizen Promaster Nighthawk

Citizen has long developed tools that empower us to get there, and the Promaster Nighthawk is no exception. The Nighthawk is at once practical enough for everyday use, and robust enough in its feature set to tackle highly technical use cases in flight, and on the ground. It does all of this in style and comfort, not to mention at an amazing value.

The Citizen Promaster Nighthawk presents as all-business, featuring a black steel case measuring 42mm in diameter. A black dial hosts high contrast information in white, keeping each element as legible as possible. Large Arabic hour numerals make timekeeping a breeze with a unique 24 hour display built within the left side of the dial. A semi-circular ring reads off 24 hours at two levels where one of two parts of the same hand will read off the second timezone. 

At the dial’s edge things get even more interesting. It is here you’ll find a slide rule with inside and outside scales that can be manipulated via the crown at the 2 o’clock position. This allows the wearer to quickly calculate speeds and distances, as well as calculate fuel consumption and consumption rates with just a few pieces of data. It’s old school, but its inclusion adds some real character to the Nighthawk that will undoubtedly serve as inspiration for the most curious among us.

The Promaster Nighthawk uses Citizen’s brilliant Eco-Drive technology, meaning it can harness energy from any light source. This is technology that Citizen has been perfect since the ‘70s, and ensures you’ll never be without sufficient power when you need it most. 

Even with the wealth of technology and complication offered here, the Nighthawk is still supremely wearable, clocking in at a mere 47mm from lug tip to lug tip and less than 13mm in height. This is a watch with presence, but not at the expense of getting in the way. It’s there when you need it. The leather strap is the perfect companion to the case, keeping with the black theme, and most importantly, supple and comfortable.
