Introducing the Hanhart Primus Black Ops Pilot Limited Edition

Back in 2016, we reviewed the Hanhart Pilot Primus Desert Sand, an automatic chronograph that, while still inherently Hanhart, was a deviation from their usual historic pilot-style watches. The Primus line on the whole shares similar design elements across their Pilot, Diver and Racer ranges, with the most pronounced detail being the large, articulating lugs. For 2017, Hanhart is releasing a new edition to the Primus line–the Primus Black Ops Pilot.

In 2015, Hanhart released the Hanhart Primus Survivor Pilot–a chronograph limited to 50 pieces that sold out before the production run was completed. Like its predecessor, the Hanhart Primus Black Ops Pilot will also be a limited edition, this time to just 82 pieces to honor the brand’s founding date, 1882.Hanhart_black_ops_2

The case of the Black Ops Pilot features the same design measuring 44m across and 15mm thick, only this time it has a black DLC coating. The articulating lugs allow the lug-to-lug length to range from 47.6 to 53.5mm, which is a really undersold feature of the watch. Of course, the Black Ops Pilot has Hanhart’s trademark red pusher for the chronograph function. It’s the brightest pop of color in an otherwise muted palate.

The Primus Black Ops Pilot shares the same handset as the other models in the line. The big, oversized hands feature Super-LumiNova and are skeletonized to allow for visibility of the dial underneath.

The dial is, according to Hanhart, a “bronze green” color. One major thing the dial has going for it is legibility. Together, the large hands and markers make it a breeze to see the time at a glance.Hanhart_black_ops_12The movement is a Valjoux 7750 chronograph at its base, but Hanhart tapped La Joux-Perret to modify the caliber into a two-register layout. But beyond that, the tweaks also result in properly spaced out sub-registers that keep the dial portions in check. Furthermore, in a standard 7750, the running seconds are at nine o’clock and the 30-minute counter is at 12 o’clock. Here the seconds remain at nine but the 30-minute sub-dial is pushed to three.

The Hanhart Primus Black Ops Pilot Limited Edition is available from WatchBuys for July, 2017 delivery. Each watch will have a unique serial number which can be requested and reserved. The WatchBuys direct price is $2,970.
