So, father’s day is just over a week away and your window to get something in time is closing. While we’d all like to run to our local mall or jewelry store and drop 5k on something amazing for dad… this isn’t his birthday, it’s a made up holiday, so something affordable, but still thoughtful is best. And if it costs a bit too much, you can split it with a sibling, or guilt your mom into chipping in. Anyway, here’s a quick list of watches you can get on Amazon (cause they can overnight it) that should do the job. And to make things more “thoughtful” we’ve grouped them by dad type, whatever that means.
Outdoorsy Dad – Timex Intelligent Quartz $144
Does your Dad prefer the great outdoors? Is a fun weekend one spent on a hike? Well, this watch does just about everything you could ask for, and still manages to look pretty cool. Featuring tide, temperature and compass functions as well as indiglo, this Timex is a great tool for the casual outdoorsman.
Exact Change Dad – Casio Edifice $101
Does your Dad keep a close eye on spending? Does he calculate tips at a restaurant to the exact amount? Well, you can tell him to put the calculator away, because this Casio Edifice features a slide rule bezel, which one can use for division, multiplication and much more. It’s also a 1/20th sec chronograph, so now Dad can know how long he waited for that side of fries to an exacting degree.
Traveling Dad – Orient Excursionist $187
Does your Dad travel for business? Is he bouncing around the globe enjoying his retirement abroad? Well, then he needs a dual-time watch, and the Orient Excursionist is probably the best priced mechanical GMT out there. Now, with the aid of a second time-zone, he has no excuse for calling you at 11:30pm on a Friday night when you’re out drinking with friends.
Good Deal Dad – Seiko 5 SNK809 $55
Does Dad collect coupons? Has he always been the type to wait for something to go on sale, even if it’s out of season, to buy it? Well, the Seiko 5 SNK809 is probably the best deal for a mechanical watch anywhere. For a mere $55, you can pick up this great looking, reliable, automatic Seiko with day and date. Not only is this watch amazingly cheap, it’s genuinely great looking and w&w favorite.
Healthy Dad – Nike FuelBand $190
Is Dad on a health kick? Is he counting calories and going for long evening walks? If so, the Nike Fuel Band can help motivate and track progress. It’s also kind of cool sci-fi looking piece of arm candy, not that Dad’s are known for their space-age style.
Tactical Dad – Bertucci $125
Does Dad read a lot of Tom Clancy books? Are his preferred wardrobe colors drab green, khaki and black? With an olive green nylon strap, black titanium case and no-nonsense mil-inspired dial the Bertucci A-2T Vintage Titanium field watch will look right at home. Their unique solid body construction makes then extra durable and the lightweight titanium makes it extra comfortable.
Sporty Dad – G-Shock G-Rescue $114
Does Dad still run around and play sports? Do watches tend to get smashed, scuffed and broken in his company? Then an overbuilt, rubberized G-Shock might be a good choice. With a slew of modes and features including a stopwatch, solar power and atomic time keeping, not only can this watch withstand a bump or two, it’s got everything he’d need in a timing device.
Simple Dad – Skagen $59
Is Dad a no fuss, keep it simple kind of guy? Does the idea of non-essential accessories bug him to no end? Then perhaps this super simple, clean and affordable Skagen would be a good choice. Also featured in our Bauhaus guide, this elegant design is about as stripped down as possible, telling the time with nothing superfluous.
Lazy Dad – Citizen Eco Drive $96
Does dad have a box of dead watches? Is the idea of getting a battery changed too much to deal with? Is Dad too lazy to set the time and date on a mechanical watch if it runs out of juice? Well then, a simple Citizen Eco Drive will surely fit the bill. Leave it in the sun for a few hours before giving it to him, and it will run for 180 days. The simple design will also require little more than a glance to read, and you can come back once a month to adjust the date, if needed.
Diver Dad – Seiko Monster $175
Does dad spend his weekends scuba diving? Or perhaps on a pool float, iced tea in hand? Either way, the cult favorite Seiko Monster will be able to withstand the pressure…or slight dampness as it may be. With a bright orange dial, this is also a great option for the Dad who likes a little “pop” in his wardrobe.
