2018 marks the third year of Rado’s continued collaboration with NYCxDESIGN, an annual event in NYC celebrating up-and-coming designers and their work. With Rado being primarily known for its pioneering watch design with a keen focus on space age materials, the cooperation is a natural fit. As part of the collaboration, Rado will work with WantedDesign to launch the third American edition of the Rado Star Prize, a long-established, international design competition held by the firm as a platform for showcasing the works of unestablished designers.
Matthias Breschan, CEO of Rado, explains:
“Rado’s philosophy of ‘if we can imagine it, we can make it’ rings as true today as it did at the time of our inception. It is with this same philosophy and passion for innovation that we hope the Rado Star Prize will spark a flame of inspiration in young designers.”
This year’s theme is “Design Inspired by Nature.” Rado is looking for submissions with “innovative ideas for using new materials paying tribute to the theme. … The materials, look or design of the object should be a tribute to functional design for daily use with materials, textures, and inspiration drawn from nature.”
The call for entries began on January 11, 2018, and the closing date for submissions is March 9, 2018. Ten finalists and one winner will be selected later this year by a jury comprising of NYCxDESIGN participants, WantedDesign, Rado, and individuals from the design and watch community. The winner will receive a $5,000 prize to further their work and a Rado True Thinline watch. All finalists will also display their work at WantedDesign Manhattan.
