Important Candy Journalism
Today is November 2, which means Halloween week has just come to a conclusion, which in turn means that the internet was full of stories about all manner of candy. It happens every year, and as the sugar fiends that we are, it’s always fun to see what colorful or chocolaty treats are dominating the public consciousness during candy’s big moment. Last week, a story in the New York Times about Nerds Gummy Clusters caught our eye. The candy is a viral sensation on social media, and is credited with reviving the Nerds brand. There was even a Super Bowl commercial for the uniquely crunchy gummy candy this year, and another is planned for 2025. It’s no wonder the Gummy Clusters have caught on – they are uniquely photogenic, and part of the fun of this article is the view into how they are made. Doesn’t it seem like a fun job to be in charge of making the Gummy Clusters?
Also, Pizza Journalism
While last week may have belonged to candy, pizza is always at front of mind for most of us. Also in the New York Times recently, this piece on the 25 best pizza places in New York City right now will have anyone who loves pizza and New York City debating the selections and notable omissions (no John’s of Bleeker, really?), while everyone else will be salivating at the thought of grabbing a slice. Every borough is represented here, and we also see a variety of styles, from Sicilian to Neopolitan, and slice shops to more elevated fare. Of course, this is New York City pizza only, so the best pizza in the country, found just 90 minutes away by train in New Haven, CT, is not represented here, but that’s a story for another day.
The New Universal Geneve Website
Watch lovers everywhere are anxiously anticipating the relaunch of Universal Genève, announced nearly one year ago. This week we saw the brand come to life a little, with the launch of their official website. This is where new watches will be unveiled (the first collection is expected in the fall of 2026), and it’s also designed as a home for information on the brand’s storied history. According to UG, the website was created with input from collectors and watch industry veterans, and it will showcase a series of historic watches and events in the leadup to the first new Universal pieces in years. You can check out the new website here.
You Can Buy the Best “Batmobile” Ever
From Road & Track, a story for only the most serious Batman fans. Courtesy of the Wayne Enterprises Experience brand, which exists to give well heeled Batman fans luxury experiences inspired by the caped crusader, comes a screen accurate recreation of the Tumbler, the iconic, tank-like Batmobile from Christopher Nolan’s Batman films. The vehicle is a pretty good likeness for the “real” thing, and according to Road & Track it’s equipped with a GM made LS3 V8 engine that makes 525 hp. The bodywork is a mixture of carbon, Kevlar, fiberglass, and metal panels, and it even has a jet engine in the rear, which appears to be purely cosmetic (no flames, according to the article). It’s not road legal, which is probably a good thing, because it would traumatize every Cybertruck driver on the road. It’s also not cheap: it’ll set you back a cool $2.99 million, and that’s before you start customizing it to your specs.
Christopher Nolan to use New IMAX Tech in Next Film Project
Speaking of Christohper Nolan, news broke this week that the Oppenheimer director is set to use “never before used” IMAX technology in his new film, which is set to start filming next year. Nolan has sung the praises of IMAX for nearly his whole career, and has been part of numerous advancements and firsts for the large-format film and camera brand. Oppenheimer for example was the first film to black and white IMAX film. No word yet on exactly what the new tech in the new film will be, but it just adds fuel to the speculation fire about Nolan’s follow-up to his greatest career success to this point. The latest rumor? The new movie, which is set to star Matt Damon and Tom Holland, is about “aerial helicopter cops” and is inspired by the 1980s favorite, Blue Thunder. Getting those heavy IMAX cameras inside a bunch of helicopters probably would necessitate some new tech, so we’ll see how this story develops. For now, let the rumors run wild.
