Zelos Watches is one of those handful of brands that has been able to capitalize on their Kickstarter success. While the brand continues to utilize the crowdfunding site (as they did with their most recent watch, the Cosmos) they have also launched a new model apart from the crowdfunding process. The Eagle is Zelos’ take on a modern pilot watch. The dial holds onto some traditional cues with a dual dot flanked triangle at 12, aviator style hands, numerals around the dial (except for 3, 6 and 9) and a chapter ring with a minute/seconds index. The dial is multi-level as well, with the upper level featuring hour markers and a matte finish while the inner recessed part is brushed. Additionally the dial is also a sandwich construction with luminescent paint on a lower surface, showing through cut-out hour markers. The dial is visually very appealing and despite the levels and sandwich not overwhelming or busy. The only markings on the dial are the Zelos logo at 12 and the word “AUTOMATIC” above 6 o’clock.
The dial of the Eagle has a lot of appeal, but the case is no slouch either. There are two components to the case that were, per Zelos, “inspired by modern fighter jets”. The inner case holds the movement and dial and has been machined with groves around the sides. The outer case naturally holds the inner and has cutouts on the side to show off the inner piece. The 42mm case will be available in three options: two DLC finished cases, one with white hands and dial print and the other with gray; the third option is for a bronze outer case and DLC inner case. The lugs run sharply down from the smooth bezel giving it a shorter lug-to-lug distance. The crown, shaped after the grooves of an engine nozzle, screws down to help secure the 200M water resistance. On the back of the watch is a display back but rather than just the rotor is a disc with a cutaway pattern, again aircraft inspired, that still shows the rotor below.
The Zelos Eagle is a sharp and aggressive interpretation of a modern pilot watch. It takes a lot of cues from classic designs, but adds a unique case and 200M water resistance to create an updated concept. The watch ships with a display case, brown leather and canvas straps and a warranty card. You can get in on the pre-order now on the Zelos website starting at $460.
