A New “Brat Pack” Doc Looks Like a Full Fledged Nostalgia Machine

Coming soon to Hulu, Brats is a documentary that seeks to unpack the appeal and pop cultural phenomenon known as the “Brat Pack.” If you were alive in the 1980s (or just appreciate movies from the era) the Brat Pack will be extremely familiar to you. A collective of young movie stars who rose to prominence in teen films like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles as well as more mature fare like St. Elmo’s Fire, the Brat Pack really felt like a new generation was taking over Hollywood. Some members of the Brat Pack have gone on to huge success later in their careers (Rob Lowe is arguably more famous now than he ever was) while some had a decidedly tougher time. The new film, directed by full fledged Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy, has interviews with seemingly the entire cadre of Brats.

The Home Alone House is on the Market

Speaking of movies from another era, the Home Alone house is on the market. The suburban Chicago home is listed for $5.25 million, and has gone through a series of renovations over the years. At over 9,000 square feet, it’s no wonder Kevin was left in the massive house. It seems rather easy to get lost in. No word on whether or not any parts of the house are booby trapped, or whether that would add to its value. Read more at CNN here.

What Time is it On the Moon, Anyway?

Have you noticed the space race is heating up again? It is, in a big way, with multiple nations heading to the moon, or planning to, in various capacities over the next several years. Any sort of permanent or semi-permanent settlement on the moon obviously brings a whole host of challenges. How do you grow food? How do you breathe? You know, simple things like that. But another potential problem near and dear to us is one of timekeeping. A day on the moon is just a hair shorter than a day on earth (we’re talking microseconds) but over time that would lead to all kinds of weird problems with satellites and other automated systems that would keep humans alive up there. Solving this problem is essential, and while some have suggested a moon specific time zone, a better solution might be an entirely new time scale. Read all about the implications here.

A Taco Stand Gets a Michelin Star

Who doesn’t love a taco? The Mexican street food staple has reached peak popularity all over the world, which might be why the Michelin guide has given a taco stand in Mexico City a prized star. It’s a first for a humble taco stand of this type, and has already been credited with a flood of new business. The New York Times had a great story last week on Taquería El Califa de León and what sets it apart from the literally hundreds of similar outposts throughout the greater Mexico City area. It also, of course, has plenty of great photos that will almost certainly have you craving a taco.

A Microfiber Towel with a Familiar Pattern

New from Madewell and William Ellery (whose Trevor Davis is a former Changing Gears guest) we have a fun new microfiber towel that’s perfect for the beach or, perhaps, a day full of chess. The 30’’ x 60’’ towel has a distinctive chess board pattern and is made of a polyester/polyamide mix. It has a built-in button closure and, as the brand points out, can support chess games with regulation pieces or found materials. It’s quick drying, lightweight, and can be easily tied to a bike for any type of city excursion. Head to Madewell for more.
