Introducing The Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph In Green

In the past year or so, there has been no shortage of green watches. We saw plenty of releases from a wide range of brands, all embracing the color green. It was refreshing to see the watch world stray away from the standard blacks and blues and pay some special attention to my personal favorite color. Even though 2020 is behind us, I’m glad that the green watches are still cropping up left and right. Fresh from Hamilton is their new take on the popular Intra-Matic automatic chronograph featuring a beautiful pale green and white color way. Originally based on a chronograph design from 1968, the Intra-Matic is just as handsome today as it was at its debut in the late 60s.

Hamilton’s modern Intra-Matic has been around for a few years now, but it has traditionally stuck to black and white dials with contrasting chronograph sub dials. While the color of the dial on this release is new, the base watch remains the same charming automatic chronograph. Measuring in at 40mm, the stainless steel case features polished surfaces and a simple design. It’s not the thinnest case out there at 14.45mm thick, but it’s well within the range expected from an automatic chronograph. On the right side of the case, you’ll find an oversized and textured crown, flanked on either side by a slightly elongated chronograph pusher.

The case design is simple and elegant, with no external bezels to be found. A tachymeter scale outlines the dial underneath the sapphire crystal. On the dial itself, you’ll find two chronograph registers and a date complication at 6 o’clock. The resulting look is clean, concise, and legible, but it’s not without its fair share of classic American design character.

Inside the Intra-Matic is the impressive H-31 automatic chronograph movement. When fully powered up, it’ll tick for a surprisingly long 60 hours between windings. The movement is based on Valjoux’s 7753, which features several technical improvements over the base movement. The kinematic chain has been improved from barrel to escapement, the escapement itself is more reliable, a beefed up mainspring bumps the power reserve to 60 hours, and a custom monoblock rotor has been added for some visual flair. 

A pale green color makes up the base color for the panda-style dial on the new Intra-matic. The tone of green is light and neutral, making it one of the less intense green watches out there. The white sub dials really pop against the green, while the tachymeter scale (also rendered in white) ties the whole piece together. You can choose from a rich brown leather strap or a fine mesh stainless steel bracelet. Both options do an excellent job of highlighting the subtle dial color. This new entry in the Intra-Matic lineup will be available from Hamilton this summer and starts at $2195 on leather, or $2245 on the stainless steel bracelet. Hamilton.
