Nostalgia is a major factor in almost all watchmaking today. More than a mere wistful backwards glance, however, it’s a celebration of eras when technology, culture, and modernity began to connect the world in a new way. This is what Sternglas captures with the Hamburg Chrono Edition Vintage, a new watch designed as an homage to the brand’s hometown of Hamburg and the growth the city experienced throughout the Roaring ‘20s.
The Sternglas Hamburg Chrono Edition Vintage Channels Old World Charm
Sternglas was founded on the simplicity of Bauhaus style, and we see that carry over in the Hamburg Chrono Edition Vintage. But the usual monochromatic aesthetic of Bauhaus has been softened thanks to both the warm gold-colored PVD stainless steel case and the charming dark green satin-brushed dial reminiscent of old-world automotive interiors. One gets the impression of wearing a piece of a beautiful coachbuilt car, both parts resplendent and restrained. The Hamburg Chrono is designed with ergonomic dimensions: its case is 42mm by a compact 46mm, and thinness is only 9.3mm excluding the sapphire crystal.
The Chrono Hamburg Edition Vintage is powered by the Seiko TMI VK64 Mecha-Quartz caliber, which displays the date at 6 o’clock for symmetry and running minutes and hours at 9 and 6. The chronograph layout provides Sternglas opportunities to implement wonderful touches of detail like orange accents along the inner dial, chronograph hand, date window, and even start/stop pusher. But perhaps the most impressive display of detail is actually on the caseback and its intricate engraving, which depicts a vintage car whizzing past sailboats along the Alster River with Hamburg’s City Hall in the background. It’s a perfect tribute to a time when the city found itself on the cusp of its transition from a primarily merchant city to a cosmopolitan one.
The Hamburg Chrono Edition Vintage is a watch befitting of its lovely hometown and its history. You can pair your new Hamburg Chrono Edition Vintage with a variety of strap and bracelet options ranging from black and brown leather straps, multi-link bracelets, and even milanese loops. Each watch is individually numbered. The special launch price is $419 USD, and regular MSRP is $449. To get all the details about Sternglas and the Hamburg Chrono, visit sternglas.com.
