Watches, Stories, and Gear: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Last Client, Huckberry’s Retail Store, and Fossil’s Fantastic Four Appearance

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of our favorite content, watch or otherwise, from around the internet. Here, we support other creators, explore interesting content that inspires us, and put a spotlight on causes we believe in. Oh, and any gear we happen to be digging on this week. We love gear.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Last Original Client

For most people with an interest in architecture, the best you can do with respect to the works of Frank Lloyd Wright is to admire his buildings from afar, or perhaps get the guided tour experience if you visit his most famous pieces. Obviously, far fewer people actually get to live in the homes he designed, and fewer still are alive today that can tell you what it was like to work with the architect during the building process. This wonderful piece in NPR puts a spotlight on Roland Reisley, who recently turned 101 years old. He is, according to NPR, the last surviving original client of Frank Lloyd Wright, and he still lives in the home he designed. He’s been at the residence in Westchester County, NY for over 70 years, and has become a bit of a Frank Lloyd Wright scholar in that time. This one’s a must read for anyone with an interest in architecture.

Huckberry Opens Shop: Brick & Mortar in Georgetown

For over 14 years, the team at Huckberry has worked to curate a collection of clothing, gear, and home accessories like no other. While their offerings have drawn the attention of many, you were only able to shop online or at one of their legendary warehouse sales, until now. Earlier this month, Huckberry unveiled their latest undertaking; a dedicated retail storefront in the heart of Georgetown.

As co-founder Andy Forsch puts it, “The way the store is broken out you really get head-to-toe looks—and it flows almost like a great piece of editorial design, with cadence and stops that keep it interesting”. Anchored by their in-house brands, the store has been carefully designed to inspire adventure throughout each of its sections, choosing to utilize images and decor from adventures they’ve had over stock images you might find elsewhere.

While the space might be a retail storefront first, it represents new opportunities. “We see it as a space where we can host product launches, screenings, listening parties—bring the media and mission to life in the shop itself,” Andy shares. “Imagine watching DIRT or Huckberry Homes in-store and shopping the exact looks featured on Josh Rosen or Dean Petty.”

Fossil’s Spotlight in Fantastic Four

Watches and cinema: a combination of two distinct enthusiast communities that inspired our very own “Time On Screen” podcast, countless watch spotting articles, and even a number of franchise collaborations over the years. When the newest release of Fantastic Four was announced, it wasn’t long before we started seeing co-branded offerings pop up from the likes of G-Shock (appears to be UK only at this time), Citizen, and now Fossil. In a recent article for Gear Patrol, editor Johnny Brayson dives into this unique, “retro-futuristic” offering that caught his eye. With a retail price of just under $300, the limited edition of 804 pieces has already sold out so clearly Johnny isn’t the only one who thinks it’s cool.
