Worn & Wound
The Custom A-13A Pilot Chronograph Built to Survive a Spy Plane

Chronographs, espionage, physics, aviation: this story from the Worn & Wound archives is filled with some of our favorite things. From February of 2018, this story from Mark McArthur-Christie details the process of Paolo Fanton’s quest to get his A-13A Pilot Chronograph ready to fly in a U-2 spy plane at altitudes in excess of 60,000 feet. It’s complicated, fascinating, and not for anyone with an aversion to heights.

NASA
Making History: NASA and SpaceX Launch Astronauts to Space!

By the time you read this, NASA astronauts might be well on their way to rendezvous with the International Space Station after a successful launch of the Crew Dragon, a rocket built in partnership with SpaceX. Or, if the weather refuses to cooperate, as was the case earlier this week, we might have to continue to wait for this historic launch, the first time humans have flown into space from US soil since the days of the space shuttle. But if you happen to catch this post early, be sure to head over to NASA’s live stream of the launch to catch history in the making.

The New York Times
This Car’s Yearly Tune Up Costs as Much as a Honda Civic

Eric Taub’s recent look at the absolutely mind blowing Bugatti Chiron is not a typical car review. How could it be? The Chiron is just about the least typical car currently in production. While Taub’s write up in the New York Times certainly covers the driving experience, it also takes a peek behind the curtain and gives you a sense of what the Chiron shopping and ownership experiences are like, complete with input from owners (including Jay Leno). For those of us who will never so much as sniff an experience like that, it’s a fascinating look at what it’s like to be around a vehicle that makes a Huracán look pedestrian.

David Lynch Theater
What is David Working on Today?

David Lynch, director of subversive classics like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, has become something of a YouTube sensation under quarantine, delivering daily weather reports from his home in Los Angeles. This week, he dropped a new video in which he guides us through replacing a drain in his sink. That’s not a mistake – this is literally Lost Highway meets “This Old House.” Definitely weird, but strangely transfixing for Lynch fans, and in a year where new movies have been effectively cancelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s just fun to have new content from one of the greatest American filmmakers.

Outside Online
How to Become a Better Travel Photographer at Home

For those of us who enjoy traveling and documenting those experiences through photography, the last few months have been rough. If you love photography and are feeling uninspired being stuck at home, Outside Online has some great practical advice on how to keep those photography skills sharp when your ability to get out into the world is a bit limited. Now is a good time to challenge yourself in a relatively low stakes way, and maybe once we’re all able to move about in the world again, the photos we take will be that much better because of the work we put it in now.
