Jardur Spotted in The Tomorrow War

If it’s not completely obvious, we’re all pretty big movie fans here at Worn & Wound, and there are few things we enjoy more than interesting watch showing up in a film when we least expect it. If you watched The Tomorrow War on Amazon Prime recently, you may have caught an unusual watch on the wrist of Oscar winner JK Simmons. He can be seen wearing a Jardur Degreemeter on screen, a watch he’s also sported in his Starz series Counterpart. So what’s the deal with Jardur? They’re a recently resurrected brand that seems to have been primarily known for aviation watches, which makes sense given Simmons plays a Vietnam veteran and C130 pilot in the film. You can read more about the Degreemeter right here.

The NYT Looks At Significant Postwar Architecture

© George Lambros

You don’t have to be a serious architecture enthusiast to enjoy spending some time going through this piece from the New York Times Magazine that caught our attention recently. The conceit here is simple: a small group of designers and architects met over Zoom to discuss their picks for the 25 most significant works of architecture since the end of World War II. A lot of ground is covered, and the reprinted excerpts from their conversation are fascinating, and will have you wondering about the definition of architecture itself, and if it needs to be revised for the world we live in now. But it’s likely the images of these buildings that will have you lingering on this story long after your lunch break ends.

House of Gucci Gets First Preview

Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Adam Driver, and Jared Leto in a Ridley Scott directed film about the 90s tabloid spectacle that was the muder of Maurizio Gucci? Sign us up, we’re in even before this incredible trailer that will have Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” stuck in your head all weekend. This movie would appear to have just about everything you can ask for. Multiple generations of mega movie stars, some incredible (incredibly bad?) accents, Italian vistas, Lady Gaga making threats over espresso, and costumes. I mean, check out Pacino’s suits. A movie about the Gucci family would never let us down when it comes to costume design. And remember, Ridley Scott is in his 80s, and has two movies out this fall. A reminder to all of us that we clearly should be working harder. House of Gucci hits theaters in November.

Time Crystals No Longer Sci Fi?

Maylee for Quanta Magazine

Time crystals may sound like a macguffin from the latest Marvel movie, but physicists at Stanford, Princeton and other universities have used Google’s quantum computer to demonstrate a “real” one. What the hell is a “time crystal”? This is a new phase of matter that will forever cycle between states without consuming any energy in the process. What about that pesky 2nd law of thermodynamics, you say? These crystals don’t have time for that (sorry). While the research may not yet have any practical use, the study opens a plethora of gateways for additional research, and as Roderich Moessner (director of the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems) says: “Something that’s as stable as this is unusual, and special things become useful.” More from quantumagazine here.

eBay Finds: Vintage 1972 Benrus “Orbit Robot”

Credit: vncntvega0

This 1972 Benrus diver is a bit of a cult classic. You don’t see these too often, and when you do try eyre not usually in good condition. This one has definitely seen use (as it should be!), but not abuse. The large UFO steel case has some honest wear, but over all looks good. The dial and hands are excellent. Best of all, this example comes with the original bracelet (or at least a period correct Benrus bracelet that fits correctly). I qualify the bracelet as I’ve not seen this watch with the bracelet before. Either way, it’s a great touch. Nice example of a 1970’s funky knuckle stagger tool diver.
