w&w Father’s Day Gift Guide

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and while we’re sure pops would be more than happy to get another “Word’s Greatest Dad” mug, we think it’s a good time to go above and beyond and get dad something really cool. To help in the ideas department, we’ve put together this gift guide–most of it well under $500–featuring some of our favorite picks, horological and otherwise.

Seiko 5 SNK Series

As far as watches for under $100 go, you can’t beat the Seiko 5 SNK series. These little workhorses set the standard for what an affordable automatic watch can be, and the rest are just playing catch up. The “5” stands for the five pillars of the line: automatic winding, day/date display, water resistance, recessed crown at 4 (for comfort), and a durable case and band. The SNK packages that ethos in an handsome field watch, readily available in black, olive, blue, and cream. Get dad one or all four, and a handful of straps for more options.

Casio G-Shock DW5600E-1V

The G-Shock DW5600E-1V is the most basic model from brand, yet it still retains a lot of great functions—among them a stopwatch, an alarm, a countdown timer, and 200-meters of water resistance—in a relatively slim and unassuming package, at least as far as G-shocks go. With a solid resin case and integrated bracelet, it’s a tough watch that can take a beating, and is a perfect beater for doing house chores or swimming laps in the pool. If dad’s a bit of a strap nut, the DW5600E-1V can be fitted with adapters to accept aftermarket slip-through bands.

Snow Peak Pack & Carry Fireplace

If dad spends weekends camping, grilling, or some combination of the two, Snow Peak’s medium-sized Pack & Carry Fireplace may be the perfect gift. It’s constructed in Snow Peak’s Japanese factory and features solid stainless steel construction, with a design that keeps the flame contained and the ground underneath from burning. It also folds completely flat for total portability. Purchase the additional Grill Bridge and Net to convert the Fireplace into an efficient grill ideal for that weekend camping trip.

Junghans Max Bill

If dad dons a suit and tie every morning, a solid dress watch may be right up his alley. And for that, there’s the Junghans Max Bill family of watches. The Max Bill line is one that we’ve written about numerous times in the past, and we’ve done so for good reason. As far as simple Bauhaus watches go, few can beat this classic from Junghans, and believe us when we say many have tried. Junghans has expanded the collection to include an option for everyone—quartz at 38mm, manual wind at 34mm, automatic at 39mm, and a chronograph at 40mm. They also expanded on the color palette to include grey, white, silver, and black dials, as well as accents like red, cream, and blue numerals.

MMT Watches

For a slightly more attainable minimalist option, there’s MMT. Unlike the hundreds of Daniel Wellington clones we’ve come across, MMT has an interesting take on the modernist watch, with the brand utilizing a mix of organic and industrial materials to great effect. The C31 is especially cool, featuring a crownless steel case plated in rose gold and an off-white dial with embossed concentric circles. The time is set via a small push button on the case back, which advances the hands when the button is depressed. It’s a cool watch, and a great budget-friendly gift for professional dads.

OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker

Come summer, the only thing better than a cold beer is a chilled batch of cold brew coffee. If dad’s a voracious java drinker, then the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker can help take his habit to another level. It’s a smartly designed kit built to create the perfect batch of coffee extract, which is sweeter and far less acidic than your average cup o’ joe. The extract is ideally mixed with water, and can be served hot or cold (though for my money, I’d go with chilled on the rocks).

MK II Hawkinge

MK II is a boutique brand focused on producing tool watches with designs honoring some of the greatest mil-spec watches ever created—from the robust Paradive, a watch paying homage to the Benrus Type I, to the Fulcrum, a diver that conceptualizes the “American Milsub.” If dad’s into militaria, a watch from Mk II is definitely the way to go.

That said, a MK II watch is not an easy thing to get a hold of; MK II owner Bill Yao has developed a reputation for being incredibly meticulous, with many of his watches first being assembled in Switzerland, then shipped to MK II’s workshop in Pennsylvania where they are disassembled, QC’d, and and assembled once more. This attention to detail is what has earned MK II a loyal following, but it’s also responsible for some dreaded lead times and watches being out of stock.

HawkingeMKIIEarlier this week, MK II took a step in remedying that problem with the brand’s first ready-to-wear timepiece—the Hawkinge. Manufactured in Japan to Bill’s specification, the Hawkinge pays homage to the MK XI—a watch considered by many to be the finest military timepiece ever produced. Bill won’t be disassembling each watch, but you can be sure that they won’t be leaving the MK II headquarters without his approval. The Hawkinge is available with or without date, and comes in a MK II-branded hard case (which can store two additional watches), a leather or nylon strap, a spring bar tool, and a few extra sets of spring bars. Though MK II is currently accepting orders the watch won’t ship until June 25th, but surely dad won’t mind the wait to get something so completely cool.

Autodromo

For the fatherly gearhead, Autodromo offers a catalogue that’s sure to please. From the recent Group B series pulling inspiration from ‘80s era race cars, to the Prototipo chronograph honoring iconic racing chronos from the ‘60s and ‘70s, there’s certainly plenty to choose from. Autodromo also recently launched a Group B line extension dubbed the Evoluzione, a slightly larger take on the watch with a case partially manufactured right here in the States.  Like the MK II Hawkinge mentioned above, the Evoluzione won’t ship until after Father’s Day, but it’s a watch well worth the wait.

Autodromo also offers some damn nice motoring accessories, from a range of beautiful sunglasses to a set of stylish driving gloves.

Saphir Shoeshine Starter Kit

If dad’s shoes are looking the worse for wear, get him this fantastic Saphir shoeshine starker kit from the Hanger Project. Don’t let the name throw you; it’s got everything dad might need to bring his tired shoes back to life, including two wax and cream polishes (you choose the color), a jar of Saphir Renovateur, brushes and daubers, a shoehorn, and a cedar shoeshine valet.

Marathon Diver Quartz Medium

For the active waterman in the family, the Marathon Diver Quartz Medium offers a robust package at a wholly palatable price point. Manufactured in accordance with US government specifications, Marathon watches have been worn by our armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, so as far as field testing goes they’ve been through the ringer. Made in Switzerland and boasting tritium tubes and 300-meters of water resistance at a subdued 36mm, the Diver Quartz Medium is a tool watch through and through.

worn&wound Gift Card

If dad’s already got an overflowing watch collection, then perhaps a new timepiece isn’t in order. In that case, gift dad a worn&wound gift card for our shop where he can choose from our line of American-made watch accessories, including our recently launched Model 2 premium watch straps featuring leathers from Horween and Wicket & Craig, as well as our newest watch roll made of grey waxed canvas and Horween Chestnut Essex leather.
