When it comes to shopping for vintage watches on eBay, it can be a gold mine, but it can also be a minefield. Not too long ago, our very own Christoph McNeill (you all might know him as Instagram’s @VintageDiver) wrote a handy, common sense guide to buying vintage watches on eBay (check out Part 1 and Part 2). Today, we’re kicking off a series we’re calling eBay Finds, where Christoph will highlight some great vintage gems looking for a new home. Happy hunting!
Listing: Bulova Accutron Vintage Deep Sea 666 Feet Steel Diver Electronic Watch
There are numerous vintage Bulova Accutron divers that are highly desired by collectors, but this Deep Sea “Devil Diver” has, in my opinion, one of the best designs of the bunch. The example here looks to be correct and all original, with the acrylic “coke” bezel in excellent condition. You’ll often find that these bezels come damaged, so getting one this nice is not all too common. Also, the unpolished case is in good condition, with sharp lines and a correct signed crown. The watch also features a working tuning fork movement. This one is a lucky find, for sure.
Listing: RARE Vintage 1963 Consul Super Étanche Automatic EPSA Super Compressor Watch
This vintage Consul Super Compressor is a great find for all of you Super Compressor fans. It’s the smaller 36-millimeter variety (collectors tend to go for the bigger ones), but it’s also all original with the correct super dome acrylic crystal (definitely needs a polish, though) and cross-hatched crowns. The Consul isn’t a common model, especially with a silver dial (most Super Compressors you’ll come across will feature black dials), and the fat arrow hour hand is a really nice touch, too. More well known brands go for way more than the “buy it now” price set for this one, so this is a great deal if you’re looking to get into Super Compressors, or if you’re just looking to add another one to your collection.
Listing: Vintage Omega Seamaster Calendar
Buying vintage watches on eBay is always somewhat of a risk, but sometimes you have to take a chance to possibly grab a gem at a good price. This vintage Omega Seamaster Calendar is the perfect example. It’s an early model, with the date at six o’clock—a highly sought after detail—and a bumper movement. The steel case looks nice and features Omega’s iconic fat lugs. The dial looks original, too, though admittedly the provided photos aren’t too great. The crown is definitely an Omega crown, but it’s likely a replacement as the crown for this model should be the button style rather than the clover leaf style. Still, this is a good looking bumper Seamaster that, to me, looks like a worthwhile risk.
Listing: Vintage ’68 Seiko Bell-Matic Alarm Watch, 4006-7000, 27J, “Proof,” Works
What we have here is a great looking Seiko Bell-Matic from 1968 with a beautiful dial and an unpolished case. It does not come with the original bracelet, which is a bit of a bummer, but this is one of the better looking Bell-Matic designs so the trade-off is well worth it. The bold case with strong lugs and brushed finish goes well with the sharp silver dial. These vintage alarm Seikos are still dramatically undervalued compared to other vintage alarm watches, so this one is a great buy.
