Watches on the Screen: John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan Wears a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono

Hamilton has a long and storied connection to Hollywood, with Hamilton watches having appeared in over 450 films throughout the years. The first-ever appearance of a Hamilton watch on screen was in the 1932 film, Shanghai Express, and in 1951, for the sake of historical accuracy, Hamilton was chosen as the watch for the hit film, The Frogmen.

One of my personal favorite on-screen Hamilton watches was the “Murph” watch worn by Jessica Chastain’s character in Christopher Nolan’s space-and-time-faring blockbuster, Interstellar. It was a unique piece developed just for the film (and it’s integral to the plot), and I still dream of Hamilton releasing it as a general release model someday. I know there are a decent number of collectors who agree.

Hamilton is now making the shift from the silver screen to the small screen with Amazon Prime’s long-awaited series, Jack Ryan. This is the first time Hamilton has ever outfitted a television series (or, in this case a streaming program, but let’s not delve too deep into semantics).

Jack Ryan stars John Krasinski—The Office, A Quiet Place (psst, see this movie!)—as the titular character, a CIA analyst turned field agent tasked with preventing a terrorist attack in the US. It’s a highly anticipated reboot that hopes to show a more contemporary take on the character, who has in the past been portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine.

In the series, Krasinski wears a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono in all black, a tactical take on a familiar template. The black PVD-coated case measures 42 millimeters across, and the watch is outfitted with Hamilton’s H-21 automatic chronograph caliber, which offers 60 hours of power reserve. The case is rated to 10 bar, and the sapphire crystal features anti-reflective coating.

The black dial continues the stealthy vibe by keeping things tonal with gray Super-LumiNova, and the only real pop of color is the red arrow tip of the chronograph seconds. Overall, it’s a slick piece and certainly an upgrade from Jim Halpert’s horological choices.

Jack Ryan premiers August 31 on Amazon Prime. The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono is $1,795. Hamilton
