Before Heritage Was Cool – an Overview of Seiko’s Incredible Historical Collection from 2000

Modern reissues of historical watches have been the trend of the past few years. Seiko, not immune to market demands, has also taken part in the heritage game, reissuing watches based on or inspired by historical counterparts. Way back in 2000, long before today’s peak, Seiko did something really cool with their history. Let’s imagine that just for a moment we could turn back the hands of time, go back 18 years with exactly JPY 1,735,000 (or roughly $16,000 today). What could that get you? Well, nothing short of seven (yes, seven!) accurate reproductions of Seiko classics deemed worthy by the brand to be reissued.

Donald Knuth is a legend in the field of computing and the author of The Art of Computer Programming, a continuing, four-volume collection that is regarded by many in the field as a foundational text. It’s also long, dense, and not for the layperson (so much so, in fact, that a blurb from Bill Gates on the back cover of the book reads: You should definitely send me a résumé if you can read the whole thing). The New York Times recently featured Donald’s decades-long journey to complete his opus, which, he estimates, is at least 25 years out.
