Casio has announced a series of three new models in their Vintage collection. The A700W series is made up of retro-inspired digital timekeepers that will make many enthusiasts of a certain age fondly nostalgic for the watches of their youth. With an ’80s vibe and a low-cost of entry, these watches might hit the spot if you’re after a casual summer beater.
Some of Casio’s catalog straddles an interesting line between “enthusiasts favorite” and “pharmacy staple.” Some would argue they’re more of an electronics company than a watchmaker, but that hasn’t stopped them creating truly advanced and horologically interesting watches in their G-Shock line for years. Casio also finds themselves on the wrists of folks who simply don’t care about watches at all, but just need something reliable and inexpensive to tell the time with. Maybe beep at them when they have an appointment. Casio has this market absolutely cornered.
The A700W series that has just been unveiled looks like what someone in that second camp would have picked up in a department store if it was the mid-’80s, and therein lies the appeal. A simple digital interface, multiple functions (a simple calendar, alarm, and stopwatch), and slim cases and bracelets to match make these pure, inexpensive fun. Those bracelets alone have an almost transportive effect. Sometimes it’s nice to just wear a watch that’s simple, without frills, and makes you think of happy times from your past. For as little as $34 (and $75 on the high end if you opt for the gold-tone, which you should), Casio has you covered.
