Michael Bay Poised for Comeback with Ambulance

People have strong opinions about Michael Bay. The director of Armageddon, The Rock, Pain and Gain, and about a dozen Transformers movies (give or take) is reviled by some for his ultra-macho style of huge explosions and quick cuts, but revered by others as a modern master of a very specific type of contemporary action film. His new movie, Ambulance, hits theaters this weekend, and film critic Adam Nayman has this look back at Bay’s career on The Ringer this week, and suggests that the controversial filmmaker might be deserving of a reevaluation by critics who have pelted him with negative reviews for years.

Hubble Discovers Farthest Object Ever Observed

credit: Harikane et al

We had news this week of a dramatic discovery from an international team of astronomers affiliated with Harvard and the Smithsonian: the discovery of what is being referred to as the most distant astronomical object ever observed, a galaxy that is a staggering 13.5 billion light years away. Something so far away offers astronomers a chance to study something that is nearly as old as the universe itself, and much of the work that will ensue will be determining what exactly the object is. Two possibilities have emerged: it could be a galaxy that’s home to some of the oldest stars in the universe, among the first formed. Or it could be a supermassive black hole, 100 million times the mass of our sun. It’s a fascinating discovery, and you can read more about it here

New DeLorean DMC Teased

Everyone is getting into the EV sports car game, including some somewhat unlikely automakers. Case in point: DeLorean Motor Company has released a new teaster image of their upcoming electric car, sparking a ton of speculation in the car community. The first image suggested gull wing doors similar to DeLorean’s iconic DMC-12 design, but this new image suggests a vehicle with softer lines than the DMC-12, which was full of harsh angles. It won’t be long before we get the full picture, as DeLorean has promised that the new car will be unveiled for the Pebble Beach Concours in August. More information here, via AutoBlog.

eBay Finds: Girard-Perregaux Seahawk

credit: capitaljewelry

Well, if you’ve been following these eBay Finds, you know I’m a sucker for a full kit with box and papers, and we’ve got one for you this week again! Vintage 1977 Girard-Perregaux SeaHawk dress watch, engraved anniversary gift, complete with box and papers. The smallish 32mm 10k gold filled case is in really nice shape, and there’s a 25 year (Quarter Century Club) engraving on the back. The gold tone dial is excellent and is clean and simple, the way a dress watch should be. Baton or stick style markers and hands are nice as well. This is a nice, three hand watch with nothing fancy to distract. The oversize crown is signed with the G-P logo as it should be, and is a good size to wind the manual wind movement. And of course, the best touch is the original box and guarantee papers. Comes on a vintage leather strap that could be original, but looks as though it should be replaced. Seller states the watch runs and keeps time.
