The Brew x Worn & Wound Metric Chrono Regulators were designed to push the boundaries of expectation. They weren’t your standard fare, even for Brew, a brand known for creativity and out-of-the-circle designs. A rare combination of an uncommon regulator layout, a stopwatch complication, color, and texture, the Metric Chrono Regulators were a series of watches that said, “I’ve seen it all before, I want something new, and something fun.” Today, we’re excited to announce the follow-up to the first series, a singular model, the Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint.
Inspired by the dark, atmospheric aesthetics of ’90s action movies, the Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint takes the design in an entirely different direction from the first series. Where bright colors in unexpected combinations took the spotlight before, this version is stripped down. Now clean and minimal, the dial is composed of light and dark shades.
One could say we removed the color from the watch, but the wise would say we added the whole spectrum. What appears to be a monochromatic timepiece hides a secret: an entirely lumed dial. The dial surface, white in light, turns luminescent blue in the dark. Gunmetal toned applied markers and hands stand out like backlit shadows against the bright surface. Lume fill on the markers glows green in contrast for added legibility and visual intrigue.
Not your everyday lume dial, if there is such a thing, creating the Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint was a challenge that required several experiments, and failures, with lume application to achieve. The final result surpassed our expectations. Not only is it a pure white in light, but it’s textured and glows with impressive luminosity.
As with the previous version, concentric circles emanate from the 24-hour subdial, adding a striking motif while bringing attention to the hours. As this is a regulator, there is no central hour hand. Instead, it is read via the subdial. As such, though small, this subdial is packed with information.
The outer ring is broken into 24 increments, one per hour, alternating between lines and numerals. Rather than 0-24, however, the index is split into two 12-hour segments, more easily indicating AM and PM hours. 12s and 6s are added at cardinal points, mirroring the elapsed minute subdial by 10 while highlighting mid-day/night and standard day/night break, further indicated through light and dark regions.
The case and bracelet stay true to the original Metric design. A 36mm rounded square, the Metric shape is uncommon but not jarring. It wears larger than a circular 36mm case while being ideal for various wrist sizes. The continuous flow from the case into the integrated-style bracelet extends the form around the wrist for a sleek effect. Built with a wide single-link design, the bracelet has a slightly brutal appeal that works with the monochrome palette of the dial.
A subtle addition is that of the gunmetal pusher at the two position. Used to start and stop the chronograph, the dark color highlights its special functionality. Otherwise, the watch is entirely brushed save polished bevels along the outer edge of the case and bracelet for an elevated touch.
Crisp and cool, the Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint pairs particularly well with dark, monochromatic outfits, such as black leather and denim or gray fabrics. The white of the dial will stand out during the day, while the glowing tones will pop at night. Reduced and neutral, the tonality will make it fit any style, and there will be no conflict with other colors.
Though the Metric has an inherently retro aesthetic, the Brew x Worn & Wound Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint takes it into modern territory with a stark yet exciting new aesthetic. Limited to 500 pieces and priced at $549, the Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint is available now for pre-order at the Windup Watch Shop, with delivery beginning in June, 2025. The Metric Chrono Regulator Lumint will also be on display at the Windup Watch Shop showroom in Brooklyn. Please schedule an appointment to check it out.
