QUICK RELEASE in partnership with Nivada Grenchen

Nivada Grenchen’s Antarctic Erotic Puts a NSFW Spin on the Antarctic 38mm

The latest from Nivada Grenchen takes the brand’s classic Antarctic 38mm and gives it a kinky twist. The new Antarctic Erotic is built on that familiar platform, but adds a hidden animated caseback that’s perhaps a little, ahem, NSFW (Naughty Scene for Wrists). But it’s not like Nivada Grenchen had its mind in the gutter when designing this watch. Erotic watches have long occupied a small but real corner of traditional watchmaking, often hiding animated scenes beneath a caseback or within otherwise conventional-looking designs. With the Antarctic Erotic, Nivada Grenchen folds that idea into the Antarctic platform, pairing a playful animated caseback with a watch that still works as a fairly conventional everyday option.

On the front, the watch brings a new set of dial executions to the familiar Antarctic formula. The release includes several versions, ranging from more classic light and dark dials to warmer brown and pink tones, plus a Tuxedo variant with a date display. The watch overall remains fairly clean in its overall design language, ensuring it doesn’t feel like a cheap novelty and one that can be worn on a regular basis.

The main attraction, of course, is on the back. The caseback reveals a small animated scene that comes to life while winding the watch, depicting a pair of penguins caught in flagrante. Nivada says the mechanism was conceived and engineered by “Dr. Coldwater,” a codename for a respected independent watchmaker, and the animation is driven directly by the winding action itself. Inside is a modified hand-wound Soprod P054 with a 42-hour power reserve, its ratchet wheel reworked into a cam profile that converts the winding motion into the vertical movement that brings the scene to life. The case sticks with the familiar 38mm “Spider Case” in stainless steel, with alternating brushed and polished surfaces that give it the same vintage-leaning look as other Antarctic models. It measures 12.45mm thick, spans 45mm lug-to-lug, and is fitted with a single-curve crystal.

Multiple variants come with the Antarctic Erotic, with options for a Beads of Rice bracelet, Flat Links bracelet, black tropical rubber strap, or a variety of black and brown leather straps, including perforated and contrast-stitched options. Prices reflect these options, starting at $1,569 on a leather strap and $1,769 on a metal bracelet.

The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Erotic will be revealed on April 1, with pre-orders opening on April 30 at 4 PM Geneva time, using a quite ingenious (and a bit cheeky) time-limited pre-order system: the pink version will be available for 69 minutes, the beige for 69 hours, and the remaining versions for 6.9 days. Once each window closes, pre-orders will close permanently. And if you think this is just a dirty little joke from the brand, Nivada Grenchen has also used the project to support real-world conservation, adopting a penguin colony of 21,000 birds in partnership with Oceanites and contributing to Antarctic wildlife research.
