If there were ever a sailor to rock a burly dive watch, it would be our pugnacious pal, Popeye. It’s a perfect match, then, that Spinnaker and Popeye would team up once again, this time on the strength of the Challenge Automatic dive watch. The new Challenger Automatic Popeye Anchor Arms Limited Edition comes in three versions, each full of character and ready for the open waters. So get your sea legs – and some spinach, perhaps – and let’s take a closer look.
The Spinnaker Challenger Popeye Anchor Arms is a Strong Dive Watch
The new Challenger Automatic Popeyes collection comprises a trio of limited edition watches. The first, and most eye-popping, model is Corncob Yellow, while Blue Buoy is takes the classic marine blue color scheme. Midnight Mast is a thoroughly modern stealthy look with a neat party trick in low light (sea more below). The watches are based on the popular Challenger Automatic format: 42mm x 49.5mm stainless steel cases with the signature vintage super-domed sapphire crystal bringing the total thickness to 19mm. Popeye stands proudly at the center of the dial and is replete with his signature corncob pipe, anchor tattoos, and, of course, bulging arms pointing to the minutes and hours. A classic seconds hand with an anchor counterweight perfectly complements our famous friend.
The Spinnaker Challenger Automatic Popeye Anchor Arms Limited Edition may well feature a gruff-looking character, but on the inside, it’s all good. An NH35 cheerfully beats and offers manual and automatic winding, a 41-hour power reserve, and a date function. Flip the watch over to be greeted by a custom caseback featuring our scraggly seafarer. All three watches in the new collection are paired with 20mm perforated rubber straps that are ready for adventure, and all are rated to a hardy 300 meters of water resistance. Throughout the watches, Swiss luminova provides ample legibility in low light, and Midnight Mast takes it to a whole new level of fun.
Spinnaker and Popeyes show what makes a collaboration project great: bringing distinct character to timepiece that already embodies the same ideals and turning what is still a serious, capable watch into a fun limited edition watch with real nostalgic appeal. The three versions are in limited production – Blue Buoy in 425 pieces and Corncob Yellow and Midnight Mast in 350 pieces, respectively. Pricing is $475, and you can learn more about this release and Spinnaker Watches on the Spinnaker Watches website.
