A Canuck typically refers to a Canadian, but for Whitby Watch Co. it’s a cornerstone of the Canadian brand’s wider pilot watch collection. Designed and assembled in Canada, just like the fighter plane to whom it pays tribute, the CF-100 “Canuck” pilot watch is offered in two variants (Mark I and Mark II), each with their own subtle nods to the Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck, the plane that put The Great White North on the map as a world-class designer and manufacturer of fighter jets. Alongside the equally utilitarian Arrow flieger and collection, the CF-100 refuses to trade style for substance in the pursuit of creating a solid tool watch that celebrates a national source of pride.
The Whitby Watch Co. CF-100 “Canuck” Watch Pays Tribute to Canada’s All-Weather Fighter
A shakedown of the spec sheet places the CF-100 Canuck as somewhat of a rarity; it is offered in both 39mm and 43mm formats, and both are forged from, appropriately, aircraft-grade titanium for lightweight durability. They both feature 100 meters of water resistance thanks to screw-down crowns, ultra bright C3 Super-LumiNova lume, and SW200-1 calibers inside. The first of the two variants, the MK I, takes inspiration from a distinct feature of the historic Avro CF-100 jet: its rounded nose. An advanced radar and fire control system lived inside the snout and enabled successful operation regardless of weather condition or nighttime conditions. This technological wonder is referenced on the Mark I on the watch’s smooth center medallion on which the hand stack is situated. The rest of the dial sees a grainy finish that eventually terminates on a sloped rehaut adorned with the minutes scale.
The Mark II, not to be outdone, takes slightly more literal interpretation that showcases a turbine-themed centerpiece and inner minutes ring. It also exchanges the Mark I’s relatively subdivided minutes track for a more simplified one. One notable shared feature is the playful lightning bolt seconds hand, which which adorned the airborne/Canuck prototype’s paint scheme and symbolizes the speed, power, and ingenuity in the design and service of the CF-100. A noteworthy model within the Canuck lineup is the MKII in fuselage grey whose stealthy silver dial matches its case and looks stunning when paired with a tan or blue suede strap. The Canuck is also configurable in Navy, Military Green, and more – see the entire collection here.
For those looking for a traditional flieger, Whitby Watch Co. is proud to present the Arrow. Like the CF-100, the Arrow comes in both 39mm and 43mm titanium cases and receive motivation from a Seiko NH38 automatic caliber complete with hacking, hand-winding, and over 40 hours of power reserve. It’s still water resistant to 100 meters and remains the most straightforward interpretation of the pilot watch today. As is usually the case, you can have it two flavors – Type A / Type B – and know that it will be up to the task no matter the occasion. Strap on the riveted leather strap and you are good to go.
Whitby Watch Co. deftly blends its unique heritage into its watches, a feat that is easier said than done. Through both the Canuck and Arrow, the brand has a winning pilot watch collection that offers something for everyone. To learn more, visit whitbywatchco.com.
