The Three Watch Collection for $5,000: Reader Edition – Alexander Sandlass

Editor’s Note: For this edition of The Three Watch Collection for $5,000, we have a selection from watch and gear enthusiast Alexander Sandlass. These three pieces run the gamut in terms of pricing (and Alexander takes advantage of pre-owned pricing for one heavy hitter) but all are icons in their own way. The two value oriented pieces (both of which Alexander actually owns) are classic enthusiast tool watches, and could form the basis for an impressive two watch collection, while the third piece is a very different kind of watch, but indisputably great looking.

When choosing three watches within this budget, one might criticize that I do not take the typical tiered approach when it comes to prices of each piece. Each piece to me holds a certain intrinsic value, and that is why these three watches were chosen. These three watches, to me, are the perfect combination for all purposes.

Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000 – $550

My first choice is a G-SHOCK GMW-B5000. When I first saw this watch, it brought back memories of when I was younger picking out the “cheap” version at Walmart, thinking I was a badass with a G-Shock. Now, this version is much more rugged, making it the perfect watch for daily carry, and one that you don’t mind if it gets a little banged and scratched up. At a price point of $550, it is not the cheapest “beater watch,” but it will last a long time with proper upkeep along with recommended battery care. That being said, the solar capabilities are amazing and you really do not have to worry about ever being without a charge.

Wearing this watch, I often get people asking about where it came from or why I love it so much. I am a very sentimental person, so having a newer version of what I had growing up, in an elevated fashion, really does it for me. These can often be found with great deals under $550, so if you’re a Casio lover like me, I truly recommend this piece.

Seiko Prospex SRPE99 – $550

My next choice is the Seiko Prospex SRPE99. This is also priced at $550. This is my watch that I use when I like to “dress up” my wrist. The rotating bezel is extremely sturdy and fun to fidget with, while maintaining the perfect diver look that never ceases to amaze. The beautiful blue dial, along with the “Pepsi” bezel, is reminiscent of the Rolex GMT-Master, at a small fraction of the cost. The movement stays extremely accurate and can be set and wound with ease. Without a doubt, this watch is able to take anything that you can throw at it. With the beautiful Seiko stainless steel bracelet, this is a perfect watch to wear to elevate any outfit you throw at it. Like the Casio, this can be found on sale for much less than MSRP, making this watch an even better choice.

Grand Seiko SBGW283 – $3800 (pre-owned)

This watch is my ultimate choice for a dress watch to rule them all. At $4,800 new and approximately $3,800 used, it’s an heirloom piece that can and should be passed onto future generations. The blue leather band made of crocodile leather, along with the light blue dial go hand in hand to create a gorgeous piece that will have everyone wondering what it is, and where to get one. This piece has a manual winding movement type, with a 3 day power reserve that is highly accurate, meaning this watch is perfect for someone who wants to keep a good eye on what time it is, all the time. Being a part of Grand Seiko’s “elegance collection,” this watch is at home at any formal occasion, but can be dressed down for more casual wear if one chooses.
