Watch Lust: Selene Tinta by Ochs und Junior

$8,600 is a lot of money to spend on a watch, and certainly more than I’ll be spending any time soon.  But, if I were to spend that much in a timepiece, I’d certainly want it to be unique, definitely consisting of quality components, and it should probably be better than most other watches in some measurable way.  Well, you’ll find all that and more in the Selene Tinta by Ochs und Junior.

Case: Titanium
Movement: Self-winding ETA 2824 movement

Upon viewing the Selene Tinta it doesn’t take long to see that it is quite unique.  A simple circular titanium case surrounds a beautifully minimal face featuring a large moonphase indicator, circular date indicator and hour markers at the 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 positions.  These markers also serve to indicate every fifth day of the month along the circular date ring.  Adding to its uniqueness, the coloration of the Selene Tinta can be complete customized by the buyer.  This is an uncommon feature for most watches, let alone one in this price range.

Within the Selene Tinta’s  beautifully playful case is a ETA 2824 with a custom moonphase complication consisting of only five components.  But not only is this complication remarkably simple in design, it is also highly accurate, requiring adjustment after an astounding 3478.27 years.

But my favorite feature of the Selene Tinta (and of the Ochs und Junior brand itself) is that despite its mechanical achievement and the fact that it is a product of Ludwig Oechslin, a leader in the world of watch deign, the watch is completely unpretentious.  Spend some time on the Ochs und Junior website and you’ll immediately notice that their playful watch design translates to their public relations and relationship with the watch buyer.  From their decision to encourage customization of the Selene Tinta to these quirky cartoons in the company’s about us section, Ochs und Junior exemplifies unpretentious quality and personality.  This is an approach to watch making rarely seen at this price point, and precisely the reason why I find the Selene Tinta quite lust worthy.
