Never Meet Your Heroes: Finding a Heuer Carrera 2447S

The big watch story this week was the release of the new TAG Heuer Carrera for the 160th anniversary of the brand, so we thought we’d highlight this story from Mark McArthur-Christie from a few years back, detailing his own experience acquiring a Carrera 2447S, the very watch the reissue is based on. It’s a fun article with some (pleasant) surprises along the way, and illustrates just how magical it can be when the horological stars align.

The MTA Is Now Turning Subway Announcements Into Ads, Starting With Awkwafina

Annie Todd for Gothamist.

If you’re a New Yorker who takes the 7 train on a daily basis and you hear the familiar voice of actress and comedian Awkwafina coming through the garbled subway car speakers making announcements from stop to stop, you can count yourself among the first to experience a new kind of marketing experience. IGN
1917: How You Make a One-Take War Film

Sam Mendes’ 1917 is a wonderful flick. It’s already won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and it’s been nominated for 10 Oscars. On the technical side of things, what makes this film fascinating is that it’s all done in one take. Okay, let me back up — it isn’t a one-take film; there’s actually some clever filming and editing to give it the appearance of it being a single take. But it’s nevertheless an amazing technical achievement made possible by the incredibly capable hands and eye of cinematographer Roger Deakins. If you’re curious about the behind-the-scene details, IGN produced the above-video with director Sam Mendes and team about the process of making a movie this way and, of course, its challenges.
