Watches, Stories, and Gear: SIHH Podcast, Apollo 11 Like You’ve Never Seen It, and More

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a weekly roundup of some of our favorite watch content, great stories from around the web, and cool gear that we’ve got our eye on. This week’s installment is brought to you by AVI-8 watches and their Hawker Harrier II Matador Edition.

Named for the Hawker Harrier “Jump Jet” which served across several air and naval air forces, the Matador Edition takes design cues from planes that flew for the Armada Espana (Spanish Navy). The 44-millimeter case features a carved caseback that shows the turbine blades of the Rolls Royce Pegasus engine that powered the Harrier. You’ll also find knurling on the crown and piston-style pushers.

The dial of the Matador features a series of gears and wheels layered on top of each other to provide depth and complexity. At 12 o’clock there is a “Grand Date” double aperture date display and at 3 o’clock a 1/20th of a second split time sub-dial, a feature possible thanks to the Matador’s re-engineered movement. The applied markers and hands feature lume throughout, so the Hawker Harrier Matador stays visible at night.

The Hawker Harrier Matador is priced at GBP260 and GBP275 (approx. $339 USD and $359 USD) and is available via AVI-8’s online store today.

Apollo 11 Trailer

The new Apollo 11 documentary just made its debut at Sundance, and with it came the official trailer. What makes this film especially exciting for all the space buffs out there is that it’s not just treading familiar ground. Instead, the film will largely feature new, never-before-seen-or-heard footage (some of it 65mm film) and audio pulled from the archives and scanned in super-high 8k resolution. If that sounds epic, it’s because it is. See for yourself.
