A Screen Icon’s Watches on the Auction Block

This week, Sotheby’s announced that they’ll be auctioning off a selection of Sylvester Stallone’s watches, and his collection is full of heavy hitters, to say the least. We’ve long known Stallone to be a watch guy, and he’s perhaps best known for wearing Panerais on screen and in public. Many, in fact, credit him with popularizing the brand in the mainstream as it rose to prominence twenty years ago. But Sly’s collection, as it turns out, goes way deeper than Panerai. Among the watches that will be auctioned are timepieces from Audemars Piguet, Cartier, and Rolex, as well as several Patek Philippes. The most notable of the Pateks, without a doubt, is a 6300G-010 Grandmaster Chime, the brand’s most complicated wristwatch. Stallone’s example is the first ever to be sold at auction. What’s more, it’s in completely untouched condition. It’s literally still in the sealed plastic bag it came in, straight from Switzerland. Head to Sotheby’s website for more on this watch and others in the auction.

A New Jim Henson Documentary Comes to Disney Plus

Jim Henson is a legendary and revered figure by many. He’s responsible or partially responsible for many indelible moments and images that we all grew up with: Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal…the list goes on and on. The creator of the Muppets is the subject of a new documentary coming to Disney Plus later this month, and the trailer makes this one look like it will pull at all the heartstrings, with interviews from his collaborators, family, and of course tons of great footage from many Henson projects, some of which you may have forgotten about.

Titanic Artifacts Sold at Auction

Last month, as the New York Times reports, a UK based auction house sold a selection of artifacts from the Titanic, and collectors were ready to pounce, and open their checkbooks. The Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd auction saw bids from collectors who specialize in Titanic memorabilia vying for some of the most prized possessions to ever be sold publicly from the sunken ship. Among the lots were the violin case of the Titanic’s bandleader, a rare photograph of the iceberg that did the ship in (taken by a member of the rescue crew) and, naturally, a pocket watch. But not just any pocket watch. This particular pocket watch belonged to John Jacob Astor IV, one of the wealthiest passengers on the ship. It sold for nearly $1.5 million.

The Mudita Element Launches on Kickstarter

In today’s world of technology constantly competing for our attention, Mudita brings serene alternatives to today’s overly complicated and distracted world. From mobile phones to alarm clocks and now automatic watches, all of which have been crafted to enhance well-being and ensure what is important: living in the present moment. Proudly designed in Poland and crafted by a Swiss manufacturer with over 60 years of tradition, in masterful watchmaking. Their latest wristwatch is called Element. Its minimalist aesthetic transcends gender, making the Mudita Element a timeless and elegant accessory for everyone. The grade 2 titanium case measures 39mm in diameter by only 7.85mm thick, and because of the material choice, it surprisingly weighs only 35g. Powering the Mudita Element is the Sellita SW300-1 Swiss Made self-winding automatic movement. The Mudita Element is priced around US$1075. Head to the Kickstarter page today and secure up to a 40% discount.

The Latest Seasonal Release from Tactile Turn

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Tactile Turn here at Worn & Wound. Their pens sit on our desks and find their way into our pockets and bags on a regular basis. So we’re always happy to spread the word on their excellent seasonal releases, the latest of which is currently available for sale until June 30. If you’re not familiar with the brand’s seasonal release strategy, it’s a fairly simple concept. Periodically (with the change of seasons) Tactile Turn makes a special edition pen available for sale for a defined amount of time. All orders placed before the deadline will be filled. It’s a great way of avoiding the hectic and fraught “limited edition” rush to buy, while still offering up something special. For the spring release, they’re offering the Sprout, a pen with a green Cerakote finish inspired by plants. It’s simple, fun, and a great shade of green, and this seasonal release is available in the full range of Tactile Turn variants, including the standard and slim versions of the side click and bolt action pens, in all three lengths. Head to the Tactile Turn website for more.

10 Things Jerry Seinfeld Can’t Live Without

At the time of this writing, Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted, his comedy about the invention of the Pop-Tart, is number 1 on Netflix. He’s been promoting the film heavily, and recently sat down with GQ for their ongoing “10 Things…” series, in which celebrities go through a list of items that are somehow essential to their life. Seinfeld’s was particularly and somewhat surprisingly EDC oriented in a fairly traditional way. Among his favorite pieces of kit are a simple Swiss Army knife, a Patagonia backpack, and a simple Bic pen. There’s also, of course, a Breitling in there for good measure, as well as Seinfeld’s favorite sneakers.
