Talking Watches With Succession’s Prop Master Monica Jacobs

Via Esquire

In one of the most recent Succession episodes, hearing Kendall Roy describe their new media-venture called The Hundred as, “Substack meets Masterclass meets the Economist meets the New Yorker.” remains as one of the many chuckle-worthy lines we’ve heard during this season thus far. Almost every character is capable of delivering such a line, especially Roman Roy, Tom Wambsgans and Greg Hirsch. Especially Greg. But in addition to the witty writing and awesome plot, as watch enthusiasts, it’s hard not to pay attention to what’s on the wrists of our favorite characters.

In a recent Esquire interview, Prop Master Monica Jacobs spills all the details as to how some of these very particular, highly-specific watches made their way onto the show. The interview also digs into how each watch is chosen and how the character’s personality is reflected upon the watch they wear. For example, why does Roman Roy wear Rolex all the time, and what’s with Logan Roy sticking with Jaeger LeCoultre? It’s a deep dive into watch spotting within one of the biggest streaming TV shows out there, and if you’re a Succession fan, you’ll appreciate all the hilarious call backs to past seasons and episodes, including when Greg massively overpays for a Rolex Submariner.

Desk Drawer Finds: Two Additional Paul Newman Daytonas That Could Fetch Millions

Via Wall Street Journal

Our beloved junk drawers have a peculiar habit of concealing long lost treasures. Whether they be a set of keys, a random token from a past trip, or that five dollar bill you knew you had stashed away in a pocket somewhere but somehow ended up in the back of the drawer of misfit stuff. A different drawer find, one of horological significance, occurred years ago when Nell Newman was digging through a drawer to find a pencil. What she ended up finding was a pair of Rolex Daytonas worn by her late father, Paul Newman.

The two Daytonas in question – a 1993 Zenith Daytona 16520 with a pearl white dial and a 2006 white-gold Daytona 116519 on a black leather strap. Both Rolexes, along with 300 other Newman family mementos are set to hit the auction block in an upcoming Sotheby’s event later this year, with each of the Daytonas projecting to fetch upwards of $500,000 to $1 million. For more information about the upcoming auction and this incredible find by the Newman family, check out the Wall Street Journal exclusive, here.

Via Huckberry

Any type of James Brand product is a familiar site on anyone’s desk, in the photography studio, and anywhere around the Worn & Wound office. They make a fantastic product. No doubt about it. But when a brand like the James Brand makes something that we love and has an awesome human being behind it running the show, it makes it that much easier for us to support. In a recent Huckberry interview that is part of their ongoing series entitled Creative Brief, we get a little more insight into the founder of the James Brand, Ryan Coulter. They touch on a whole lot of things including, Coulter’s enthusiasm for space, his work at Nike, and the books that he recommends the most. And if this isn’t enough, then maybe you should stop by the James Brand booth at one of our Wind Up shows to say hello to Coulter and check out some of his rad gear while you’re at it.

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit Is No More

After some unfortunate news this week due to an inability to source any type of major funding, billionaire businessman Richard Branson is going to cease all operations for Virgin Orbit. The once hopeful rocket company had ambitions to change the way small satellites (between 300 kg and 500 kg) were launched into space. Their unique method – using a 21-meter Virgin Orbit rocket, dubbed the LauncherOne, that launches mid flight. This isn’t your traditional vertical rocket launch from a space station. Virgin Orbit devised a method that utilizes a Boeing 747, nicknamed the ‘Cosmic Girl’, which would carry LauncherOne up to a certain altitude. Once LauncherOne would receive the green light, the rocket would then disconnect while simultaneously igniting its own engine to propel itself into outer space. With Virgin Orbit now out of the picture, this only leaves Branson’s Virgin Galactic space tourism company to support his space ambitions.
