Introducing the G-Shock GMWB5000RD-4, Their Latest in Full Metal and Bright Red

Reading over the press release for the most recent G-Shock release, it occurred to me that it’s entirely possible that a generation of watch enthusiasts is coming of age with the notion that G-Shock is a brand that produces some of the toughest metal watches in the game. Back before watches were a hobby, much less a vocation, G-Shock, to me, was synonymous with extremely tough watches that were made of some kind of plastic. While they certainly still make their hardcore resin cased watches, judging by their recent slate of releases, they seem more committed to metal than ever, and these watches tend to have a premium fit and finish to them that make them natural favorites among collectors. The full metal G-Shock is no longer a novelty – in just a few short years they have become very much the main event. Judging by the aggressive release cycle, it’s clear that people are buying them, and G-Shock seems happy to continue engaging with their collector community by releasing interesting watches with bold designs and finishes, like the all new GMWB5000RD-4 seen here.

Featuring a stainless steel case and bracelet, the hook of the GMWB5000RD-4  is its deep red IP finish. Like other Full Metal 5000 models, this one takes inspiration from the square shaped DW-5000C, which for me remains the single most iconic G-Shock case style. Of course, we’ve seen G-Shock’s modern interpretations of this case before, most recently with the GMWB5000TCF-2, which featured a laser printed camo finish in bright blue. That watch, however, was titanium, so this stainless steel variant is going to have a very different wrist presence, and I imagine it also takes the finishing treatment a little differently as well. Complementing the red IP on the case and bracelet, the screwdown caseback has a black DLC finish, which G-Shock says is highly wear resistant. 

The GMWB5000RD-4 makes use of the most advanced G-Shock tech, which includes the ability to connect to the G-Shock app via Bluetooth, atomic timekeeping, and Tough Solar Technology. The requisite alarms, stopwatches, and countdown timers are also present. Even with a bold red finish, it’s still a G-Shock, after all. 

The GMWB5000RD-4 carries a retail price of $600, and will be available beginning on January 20 throughout the G-Shock authorized dealer network. G-Shock
