In Episode 7 of The worn&wound Podcast, one of our listeners asked us about the Apple Watch and smartwatches in general. It’s no big secret that the worn&wound team isn’t exactly enamored with smartwatches. The reason for that, as we noted, is twofold. First, the allure of mechanical watches is too strong (we wouldn’t be doing worn&wound if that were not so). And second, the smartwatch industry has yet to make a case for their utility and, to be perfectly frank, necessity.
In a recent article on The Verge titled, “Now Seems like a Good Time to Ask What a Smartwatch Is,” author Lauren Goode gets to the heart of the above-mentioned issue by asking a very simple question: what is a smartwatch? The answer, it seems, is not all too clear. That lack of foundational direction is one big reason why a good mechanical watch won’t be leaving my wrist anytime soon.
