It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade since the original CIGA design Blue Planet prototype launched and won the international Red Dot: Best of the Best award in 2013. It’s also been 4 years since the first generation Blue Planet won the GPHG (think the Oscars but for watches) Challenge Watch Prize. These accolades celebrate a watch that is not only technically innovative and interesting but also beautiful. Introducing the new Blue Planet II Atlantic: An homage to the ocean that connected the old and new world, the CIGA design Blue Planet II builds on a winning formula.
The CIGA design Blue Planet II Atlantic Puts the Whole World on your Wrist
CIGA design turned to the seas for inspiration with this latest Blue Planet. The watch greets you with a stunning CNC-engraved dial that maps not only The Pond but also adjacent regions and their defining features. Underneath the curved sapphire crystal is the deep blue flanked by Europe, the Americas, and Africa – each marked with their distinct topographical features. The Rockies and Andes mountain ranges are visible, as are other bodies of water including the Gulf of Mexico and Mediterranean. The 46mm case provides plenty of real estate for the star of the show to shine, and the smooth polished bezel and case edges help maintain visual clarity.
So how does the Blue Planet II Atlantic tell the time? CIGA design references an ancient and effective method: the sundial. The outreaching compass arm on the dial acts as a universal reference point, and the two inner minute and hour rings rotate accordingly. The Blue Planet is powered by a Japanese automatic movement featuring CIGA design’s Asynchronous-follow Technology, and it operates at 21,600 vph with a 40-hour power reserve and an accuracy of -15/+30 seconds per day. At night, both the compass and the hour and minute markers are illuminated for legibility. The Blue Planet II Atlantic comes on a matching 22mm fluororubber strap for comfort, and water resistance is rated to 3ATM.
A watch like the CIGA design Blue Planet II Atlantic is designed to push the boundaries of visual and mechanical time-telling, and this new model is the latest evolution of that idea. Just as the Atlantic connected the world like never before, the Blue Planet II is sure to be a unique conversation piece, a great connector for the wearer and anyone who admires excellent design. Pricing starts at $1,199 for the stainless steel mode, while the titanium model will set you back $1,399. To learn more about the CIGA design Blue Planet II Atlantic, visit CIGA design.
