CIGA design knows a thing or two about, well, design. As a 17-time international design award winner, CIGA (China International Great Art Design) made major waves in 2021 by winning the prestigious GPHG Challenge Watch Prize for its Blue Planet model. Now it sets its sights on pushing the boundaries in a new way with the Hunter Automatic Skeleton Watch. This latest line offers an ultra-exotic aesthetic at an oh-so-reasonable price. It’s easy to see why.
The CIGA design Hunter Automatic Skeleton Watch is a True Statement Piece
The CIGA design Hunter, at launch, comes in three configurations: silver, carbon, and for those who insist on an understated look (whatever that means with this watch), matte black. The headliner of the show is the three-layered octagonal case forged from good old 316L steel with a DLC for additional hardness and scratch resistance. The frame-like flanks are bolted on the case together like a futuristic locking mechanism whose purpose is to contain a beast inside – that happens to be a custom automatic movement, but more on that in a moment. Though the case packs an undeniable visual statement, its dimensions are decidedly modest; 43mm x 48mm and a thickness of 12.1 ensure the Hunter won’t become a mere bauble to admire on your desk.
The beating heart of the Hunter is the in-house self-winding caliber CD-07, which sports a frequency of 4Hz and 40-hour power reserve. It is suspended to the center of the dial at each corner by components that also function as a shock absorption solution, and its skeletonized base plate exchanges pure visibility for an exercise in pure appreciation for mechanics. Look closer to appreciate the lumed sword hands and hour markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12. A sapphire crystal ensures protection up front, while a mineral crystal provides a peek at the rear of the movement. The Hunter is paired with an H-link bracelet that tapers from 22mm from the lugs to 18mm at the hidden double push-button clasp. It also features quick-release spring bars for easy strap changes. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters.
The term “conversation piece” is a little tired these days, but it finds new life with the CIGA design Hunter. From the sandblasted surfaces of the unique case to the cutting-edge dial layout and overall construction, the Hunter is as extraverted a watch as it comes – in all the best ways. Its mere existence is a celebration of the watch not only as a mechanical object but something that can still push the boundaries of design. Pricing is $499, and you can learn more about the Hunter and CIGA design here.
