In a sea (see what we did there) of divers across the wristwatch landscape, it’s not an easy task to make a timepiece that sets itself apart. Sometimes it feels like once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. Tusenö, celebrating 10 years in business this year, has managed to create – and iterate on – one such distinct dive watch. Its well-acclaimed Shellback model, named after the famously tough turtle shell as well as a maritime award, is receiving both internal and visual updates that mark its second generation. Thankfully it retains all of its charming features while leveling up its caliber and offering more colors. Introducing the Tusenö Shellback V2.
The Second-Generation Tusenö Shellback Is New Inside and Out
First, a quick rundown of the specifications: the Shellback is a 40mm wide, 47mm long stainless steel dive watch with a screw in crown for 200 meters of water resistance. It is paired with a 20mm steel flat-link style bracelet that tapers to 18mm at the clasp. Up top, the sapphire crystal is double-domed and features anti-reflective coating for improved clarity in all conditions. The Shellback’s dial features an attractive “sandwich” style layout and comes in myriad configurations. Most configurations come with ceramic 120-click bi-directional bezels that are also generously-lumed for nighttime visibility.
It’s in the details that the Tusenö Shellback truly shines. Every aspect of the watch, from case to dial to bracelet, shows a particular attention to detail that is far from expected – especially at the sub-$1,000 price point. Starting with the dial, the sandwich layout provides an additional layer of depth and intrigue to what is otherwise a clean and legible surface. The signature hour hand is pierced by a perfectly-shaped circle allowing the “Shellback” namesake to remain legible even while the hand passes over it. And the flat-link bracelet features beautiful polished chamfers that maintain a toolish feel but add a touch of luxury.
The second-generation Shellback introduces both a new caliber and new color options. Buyers can now decide between a bold yellow-black colorway, vintage-inspired black-gilt, classic white-black, and stealthed out DLC-white design. Inside, a brand new Elaboré grade Sellita SW200-1 movement delivers enhanced precision and reliability, as well as serviceability. Compared to the previous-generation caliber, this new Sellita engine is now adjusted in three positions and regulated to +/- 7 to 20 seconds a day.
