The 3 Watch Collection for $5,000: Reader Edition – Eric Shen

Editor’s Note: We love a well rounded collection around here, better yet if it fits within the span of a 3 watch collection that can be had under $5,000. That’s just what reader Eric Shen (@thewatchgoodiebag) has provided in this reader edition of the 3 Watch Collection for $5,000.

Choosing watches is a very personal experience and I had fun choosing these 3. Everyone’s tastes and needs are different but I feel like this 3-watch collection would work for much of the Worn & Wound readership. Cheers!

Grand Seiko SBGX261 – $2,200

The cornerstone of every watch collection is the everyday watch. It needs to be tough enough to handle the rigors of life, but versatile enough to fit into both the office work environment. This Grand Seiko is just that, sporting a design that is timeless and versatile with finishing that rivals watches that cost three times as much. On a bracelet, it goes with just about anything. It can be dressed up if put on a black leather band, or dressed down on a nato strap. The 9F quartz movement inside might be scoffed at by some, but the movement itself is technically brilliant and will keep excellent time. For those who prefer a white or cream dial, there are the SBGX259 and SBGX263 references. I personally believe that the black dialed SBGX261 is the most versatile, and has the most legible dial.

Oris Artelier Grande Lune – $2,400

Every 3-watch collection needs a dress watch and this 36mm timepiece from Oris is perfect to fill this role. This Swiss brand makes some very interesting timepieces and only include automatic movements in their watches. This specific watch has a beautiful silver guilloche dial with a moonphase complication, all for a very attractive price.

Casio G-Shock GWM5610-1 – $95

A G-Shock rounds out this 3-watch collection as the watch that can withstand almost any abuse. For those who spend a lot of time in the outdoors, or in pools, or have hobbies where any other watch might get damaged, a G-Shock will take it all in stride. The square G-Shocks are a classic design and the GWM5610-1 has the Tough Solar functionality, ensuring that it will run nearly indefinitely as long as it is periodically exposed to light, as well as a radio inside that syncs with various atomic clocks around the world. Add in legendary durability, world time, stopwatch, and countdown timer functionality and you have a watch that can handle anything life throws at it for under $100.
