Watches, Stories, and Gear: X-files Reboot, Freewheelin’ Documentary, A Blank Slate, and New Music

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of our favorite content, watch or otherwise, from around the internet. Here, we support other creators, explore interesting content that inspires us, and put a spotlight on causes we believe in. Oh, and any gear we happen to be digging on this week. We love gear.

The New Album from Shaky Eddie

If you spend any amount of time consuming watch related content on the internet, chances are you’ve come across Oren Hartov’s byline. Oren has been part of the watch community for years, and has even written a series of articles on historic military issued watches for Worn & Wound. His work has also appeared in GQ, Esquire, Robb Report, Gear Patrol and a number of other publications.

But in addition to being a prolific writer and editor, Oren is also a musician. When his band, Shaky Eddie, released their first album a few years ago, we linked you to it right here. Shaky Eddie just dropped their second album, “Dog Green Blues,” and we couldn’t be happier to spread the word among the watch community. Shaky Eddie is a jazz-fusion group featuring Oren on guitar and a crew of talented Los Angeles based session and touring musicians. The new album can be streamed on Spotify, and you can also support the project by picking up a copy of the album on vinyl at the band’s website.

The Slate Truck: Customizable and Affordable

New automaker, Slate Auto, has unveiled a new truck, aptly named “Slate Truck”.  With a strong minimalistic influence, this truck ships as a blank slate, pun intended. Instead of complex options packages that you might be forced to pay for from other manufacturers, Slate has developed an à la carte approach wherein you can order additional accessories and DIY, or pay for someone to add it for you.  Among the list of customizable features are power windows,  lift or lowering kits, and even a full kit that turns the truck into an SUV!  Oh, did we mention that Slate isn’t painting these trucks, rather leaving the composite panels blank for you to wrap yourself? While this is certainly a new approach for an automaker to take, what makes this truck so impressive is what it costs. The new Slate Truck “base model” has a MSRP of $27,500, but federal and state EV incentives could lower the price below $20,000 depending on where you live.  Check out a full overview from Car and Driver here.

Christopher Ward Celebrates the Launch of the Loco with a New Documentary

Earlier this week, Christopher Ward announced the launch of what is almost certainly their most ambitious watch to date, the C12 Loco. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our extensive review written by Zach Weiss right here, as well as the accompanying video – it’s a special watch and Zach goes into great detail on why it’s so important both for Christopher Ward and the watch community writ large.

Once you’ve had a chance to take in our review, be sure to head over to Christopher Ward’s YouTube channel, where you can watch Freewheelin’ – A Loco Story, a new hour long documentary that chronicles the months leading up to the Loco’s release. The documentary is a behind-the-scenes view into a part of the watch world most people don’t see – it’s a real fly-on-the-wall perspective as the team deals with unexpected challenges in the production of the most complex watch they’ve attempted to date. You’ll also notice some familiar faces in the footage; our own Zach Weiss and Blake Malin were interviewed for the documentary, along with key members of the Christopher Ward team and other members of the watch community.

Confirmed: The X-Files is Being Rebooted by Ryan Coogler

Ryan Coogler, best known for his work directing The Black Panther series and Creed, has re-confirmed that he’ll be working on an X-Files reboot “immediately next”. Originally accidentally leaked by the show’s creator, Chris Carter, fans of the series have been waiting for an update since 2023. As reported by AVclub, Coogler states: “I’ve been excited for that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it.” Coogler didn’t get into any serious details, but did note that, “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really … scary.” Coogler also confirmed that he’s been in contact with Gillian Anderson (who played Dana Skully), but nothing more has been confirmed about her involvement.  It seems that fans will have to continue to wait for more information, but it’s officially confirmed that the reboot is in the works.
