Watches, Stories, & Gear: The Next James Bond, Hermès Sued by California Shoppers, and the First Espresso in Space

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of our favorite content, watch or otherwise, from around the internet. Here, we support other creators, explore interesting content that inspires us, and put a spotlight on causes we believe in. Oh, and any gear we happen to be digging on this week. We love gear.

Grand Seikos Under 38mm with Mark Cho

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Grand Seiko here at Worn & Wound, and as true enthusiasts for the brand, we feel like we can say with confidence that there are few in our space who are better advocates for Grand Seiko than Mark Cho. Cho has been retailing Grand Seiko through The Armoury for years, and has a great understanding of what makes these watches. He’s particularly enthusiastic about Grand Seiko’s more classic designs, inspired by vintage references and conservatively sized. In this video which went live recently on the Armoury’s YouTube channel, Cho takes us through as many “small” Grand Seikos as he can get his hand on, and reminds us that sometimes the best things really do come in small packages.

The First Espresso in Space

A post shared by BREW WATCHES (@brewwatches)

This one’s been shared around quite a bit already in the last week, but just in case you haven’t heard about what Brew recently got up to (way, way up) we thought we’d share it here as well. The Brew team recently sent an espresso machine into the upper stratosphere using a weather balloon, where it pulled a shot timed by a Brew Metric. Of course, it was all captured on video. Why did Brew do this? Honestly, we have no idea. But the image of that espresso machine floating through the very edge of our atmosphere is a fairly indelible image.

The Alien: Romulus Trailer

If we’re thinking about space this week, it might not be solely due to Brew’s exploits with that espresso. We also saw the first trailer for the next entry in the Alien franchise, titled Alien: Romulus. The film stars Cailee Spaeny and hits theaters in August, and while it wasn’t directed by Ridley Scott, he is signed on as producer, so the project would appear to have the seal of approval from the man who brought us the series to begin with. This trailer doesn’t tell us much about what’s going on in Romulus, just that humans are being chased by an alien in a spaceship, which is basically at the core of every Alien movie. That’s not a problem for us, of course.

A New Book of Radiohead Photographs

For years, Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood has been taking photographs of his bandmates with his Yashica T4 Super camera, and they’ve now been compiled into a new book that will be available later this year. How to Disappear: A Portrait of Radiohead will be released in October, and is now available for pre-order. The photographs cover over two decades of Radiohead history, and feature the band in intimate moments on tour and in the studio. As Radiohead retreats somewhat as a band with members involved in various side projects and solo pursuits, a chronicling of the band’s early history becomes more appealing and important to longtime fans.

Hermès Sued Over Sales Tactics for their Luxury Bags

News broke this week that Hermès, the luxury brand that is known primarily for their leather goods but, of course, also makes a very nice watch, is being sued for sales practices that make buying their famous Birkin bags too difficult. The lawsuit, filed by shoppers in California, alleges that the brand is violating antitrust laws by requiring customers to have a sufficient purchase history in order to buy one of the rare, and costly, bags. If you’re a watch collector this kind of thing might sound familiar: purchase history has played a role in access to certain watches for years, so we’ll be watching this one closely.

Is Aaron Taylor-Johnson the Next Bond?

Rumors have been swirling over the last week that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to take on the role of James Bond. The “next Bond” is always something of a talking point in movie circles, but ever since Daniel Craig announced he’d be stepping down as the super spy, there’s been a nearly constant discussion about who would be next, and where the series would go from here. Taylor-Johnson has a movie out this summer (Kraven the Hunter) so an announcement soon could coincide with the media push for that film, drumming up even more hype. Taylor-Johnson has action movie experience, so it’s certainly not a pick out of left field. Vulture has more on the possible decision right here.
