Watches, Stories, & Gear: Jimothy, the Future of the Cinerama Dome, and a New Marvel Trailer

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of our favorite content, watch or otherwise, from around the internet. Here, we support other creators, explore interesting content that inspires us, and put a spotlight on causes we believe in. Oh, and any gear we happen to be digging on this week. We love gear.

Avengers: Doomsday Trailer

This week, the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was released and has already created a lot of buzz – and, of course, some backlash. While not much of the plot has been given away, we can glean a few things from the trailer, including the arrival of Victor von Doom, a confrontation with Thor, the return of Steve Rogers, and a cast that pulls from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men corners of the franchise.

Considering I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the MCU over the years, I’ve done the math and with the release date set to December 18, I can watch one Marvel film every four days and be caught up in time for its premier.

Jimothy Honored by City

You know, you really got to take the sweet with the sour sometimes. Sure, the world is burning, we’re in another forever war, lettuce will give you a gastrointestinal disease, and the cost of living is too high – but in return for all this suffering, we’ve been blessed with Jimothy.

For those unaware (and I’m so happy to be the one to tell you about this little creature), Jimothy is a wild raccoon in the Seattle area who has short spine syndrome, giving his body a slightly compressed, but nonetheless adorable, body shape. Over the past couple of weeks, Jimothy has gained widespread online attention for simply being cute and a little weird looking and I’m here for our latterday celebration of cryptids in the era of social media.

Luckily, Jimothy’s hometown of Ballard has some pretty canny officials in its ranks. Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck announced that Jimothy will be honored with an official City Proclamation, with a celebration taking place on Sunday, July 26 at Bergen Place Park near the Ballard Farmers Market. Local artists are also being invited to bring Jimothy-inspired artwork for a little art competition, so if you’re in the area, I’m sure I know what you’re doing with the rest of your afternoon.

Field Bracket by Peak Design

Peak Design is back on Kickstarter with the Field Bracket, a new camera bracket system made for photographers who regularly switch between horizontal and vertical tripod shooting. The system starts with a camera-specific baseplate, with a removable upright section that can be added when you need a more traditional L-bracket setup.

With the upright piece removed, the plate stays lower-profile for regular shooting. When attached, the design still allows access to ports and cables, while remaining compatible with Peak Design straps and the Capture Clip. The $125 Kickstarter buy-in price gets you the Field Bracket itself, with optional add-ons including the Beacon Finder Tag, the Cheese Plate for mounting small accessories, and hand or finger straps. Retail pricing is expected at $149.95 and will ship in early 2027.

Cinerama Dome to be an Alamo Drafthouse

A common trope in movies is for a character to be replaced by a far more insidious character. Sure, he or she may look the same, but it’s just a little off. Too polished, like a Stepford Wife? Too disgusting, like that guy who drinks sugar water in Men in Black? Maybe a sense of dread when she appears onscreen, like the Other Mother in Coraline

Unfortunately, this isn’t just a trope in movies, but the risk one braces for when businesses get bought out by larger companies (X.com, anyone?). There’s a hollowness to the new era brought on by a tension between nostalgia and profit margins. The end result is usually bad.

But, still, I should remain at least a little hopeful in the news that the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard has been resurrected from its pandemic-era death by Alamo Drafthouse. The Sony-owned movie theatre chain that’s known for their dine-in experience will now restore and operate the Hollywood landmark back to, I hope, its former glory. Representatives from Alamo and Sony have assured fans of the landmark theatre that they plan to keep much of the integrity of the original building and branding, including the Cinerama name, its iconic exterior, the large-format, curved screen presentation, and will have a traditional concession setup rather than having you mess with those awful QR codes

The project is slated for completion in 2028.

Cantonment x AWA Kerchief Set

Fresh off the heels of last week’s collaboration with Topo Designs, Accidentally Wes Anderson has also released a set of adventure-themed kerchiefs with Cantonment. Coming in a two-pack, each kerchief has a style specific to the world Wes Anderson created and what AWA has brought into the real world, so to speak.

One design features an illustration of Nordurgardi Lighthouse in Reykjavik, Iceland, while the other features a pattern of illustrated icons used by the brand. Both kerchiefs are made of 100% cotton, measure 18.5” x 18.5”, and (quite ingeniously, I think) feature buttonholes on all four corners.
