[VIDEO] Tudor Black Bay Retrospective, A Watch The Launched An Era

Much has been said about the Tudor Black Bay, here and elsewhere, and it’s ushering in of a new era of heritage inspired watches that’s taken hold throughout the industry. The Black Bay family has grown to include a broad range of watches, from GMTs and chronographs, to two-toned 36mm field watches, but the charm of the classic divers remains as strong today as when they were first released more than 10 years ago. Most of us here, and presumably many of you reading, have seen a Black Bay or two come through our collection at some point over the years, and each year we hold out hope for a particular spec or version of the watch we’d like to see released. It’s just had that kind of an effect on enthusiasts.

As luck would have it, we recently found ourselves with an abundance of Black Bay watches in the office, so we took the opportunity to get them together and discuss the impact it’s had on each of us over the years.

Below find a selection of our Black Bay reviews that we’ve published, including some of our favorites like the Black Bay 58, the Black Bay Pro, and the Steel & Gold Chrono. How has the Black Bay impacted your collecting? Which examples have you owned or do you hope to own? Let us know in the comments and be sure to share your ideal Black Bay that you’d love to see Tudor release this year.

Hands-On with the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue

The Black Bay 58 in blue was a bright spot in an otherwise tumultuous 2020. This was the second version of the wildly popular Black Bay 58 released in 2018, and this one ditched the vintage colorway in favor of a more contemporary blue and white scheme. This is, to date, the last steel Black Bay 58 we’ve seen from Tudor. Will we see another this year? We sure hope so. Until then, check out Zach’s thoughts on this watch right here.

Review: Tudor Black Bay Chrono Steel & Gold

The Black Bay Steel & Gold Chronograph might just be the most contentious release within the Black Bay family ever. It’s two toned, it’s big, and it’s got gold sub dials. It’s also quite unapologetic about all of it. In this review, Zach Kazan dives into all the details and finds something quite compelling about the whole package. Read the full review here.

Review: Tudor Black Bay GMT

The Black Bay GMT was released in 2018 alongside the original Black Bay 58, and it caught a lot of attention in the process. This was a “true” GMT with an old-school style Pepsi bezel all done in Black Bay styling. It was the watch many people had been asking for. Sure, it was a bit thick, but there was a ton to love about this watch and it still makes a strong impression today. Check out Ilya’s review of the Black Bay GMT right here.

Review: Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight

The original Black Bay 58 was a response to the often cited and very valid criticism of the original Black Bay’s rather generous proportions. This was the watch that finally put those old school good looks inside of an old school sized package. Here was the 39mm watch under 12mm thick that captured the magic of the Black Bay. Take a trip back in time and read Zach Weiss’ first take on the Black Bay 58 right here.

Owner’s Review: The Tudor Black Bay Pro

The Black Bay Pro is a recent release from Tudor, and brings the “true” GMT into a slightly more manageable 39mm case. This one has a brilliant footprint and ended up being a staff favorite, and as a result found itself the subject of this Owner’s Review from Blake Buettner. It’s certainly not for everyone but we love the big personality found in this small GMT. Check out the full review right here.
